I’m one of the few people who really can’t stand the Velvet Underground, so seeing a Nico album initially filled me with dread. And indeed, it turned out to be some hippy-dippy music with a dark edge that I couldn’t really connect with. The whole performance feels like something I’d accidentally stumble upon at a small club or at a house show in someone’s basement - something I’d sit in and listen to a couple songs but would head out early. I’ll admit I enjoyed Nico’s performance, set against the minimal instrumentation, more on her own record than her collab with VU. That said, it still feels pretentious and unfinished, and it felt more and more like pulling teeth getting through the last few songs. I probably wouldn’t give it another listen unless I found myself in a pretty dark place mentally. Even then, there are better, sadder songs to listen to when depressed lol
