The Slits

1979 remains undefeated. Nothing on this list has sounded like this. It's more like indie or alt rock than punk, at least compared to the contemporay punk artists around the same year. At times it's really unpolished, which I can see upsetting many people. But I think the general creativity and mixing of sounds is worth the experiment. Funk, ska, raggae, rock, there's plenty of all of this around. Instant Hit, New Town, and I Heard It Through the Grapevine are all great, but Typical Girls is the clear best song here. Kind of has a piano similar to the Neu! album, but then it changes into something that sounds a lot like Fiona Apple. Pretty neat, and I enjoyed this a lot.
