Lost Souls
Doves

Typical brit-pop band leaning toward the indie-rock side of things. Firesuite starts the album off in an atmospheric style with burbling synth and measured but BIG drums...It is an atmospheric record with songs blending into the next, sometimes feeling more style than substance. Then they hit you with The Cedar Room and after that atmospheric opening things get big and bold as the drums kick in along with some beautiful guitar figures and plaintive vocals and you just feel the build to crunching power chords that pin you back in you seat. It's a powerful moment that had it not come the album would have come and gone quite pleasantly but without anything memorable to latch not to and bring you back. While The Cedar room is the obvious high point I don't want to leave the impression that its the only hi-light...Sea Song is a beautiful acoustic guitar and piano driven song that has a lovely melody and does get the toe tapping. Rise has an intensity that hints at what's to come. Overall a fine debut from a band that had a very consistent, if somewhat under appreciated career. 3.5 stars (note I would probably give the follow up album The Last Broadcast 4 stars. On the album they toned down the atmospherics and allowed the songs and melodies to stand on their own to great effect)
