Funny that I get a Frank Black solo album before I get a Pixies album. This was alright. I really felt a lot of different influences throughout, some of which I really didn't expect. I don't really know why it needed to be an hour long; I think he could've cut some stuff out it would've been a better album for it. This really does feel all over the place in terms of sound and influence. Some tracks feel like frantic punk rock, with screeching vocals and a fuck you attitude. Others feel like he's trying to channel classic rock or something more straightforward. Others still feel almost folky in influence. And then also maybe some reggae? Oh and country? Sometimes an album feeling "all over the place" can mean it's scattered and isn't cohesive. I'd argue that this album is somewhere in the middle. It's like a meeting of two minds, each struggling for control and influence. A frantic aggressiveness fights a more calm, almost reflective voice. Sometimes they meet in the same song, sometimes they alternate tracks. But they're always fighting, back and forth. I wonder if this has anything to do with the title of the album. Teenagers are often just trying to find themselves, to figure out who they are. And they try on different personalities and styles until they do. Maybe that's what he was going for here - trying on different styles to see which one stuck best as a solo artist. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. Either way - four stars.
