I listened to this while I was working and it seemed pretty good. Like a solid 4/5. All those nice and enjoyable neo-classical Queen rock sounds even lulled me out of my stupor a couple of times, and sounded even better on a relisten.
It was fine/good, but not really what I was in the mood for today. Lots of bluesy/rock-and-roll sounds, with some neat proggy/psychodelic twists. Reminiscent of the Cream tracks I don't like quite as much, but overall it seemed like something relatively enjoyable. Good cover art.
A nice follow-up to Moon Safari, I think. Would also probably have liked this a lot in High School.
I kept wavering between 2 and 3 because a lot of the album I found kind of boring or just not to my taste, but then suddenly there'd be a really nice part that would last for about 10-15 seconds and I'd feel like it wasn't so bad. But I don't really want to listen to it again, and would probably change it if it happened to randomly come up, so I'm settling on 2. Quite a lot different than the more popular and famous Pink Floyd that came later!
I'd have really enjoyed this when I was in high school, I think. I believe I heard the 2nd track back in those days, but the 1st track is the real gem.
Weird how I had heard of this band but cannot at all recollect ever hearing them before. Alternately reminded me of the Postal Service, Japanese Anime music, Village People, Real McCoy, the 1990s, and the 2000s. Not totally my cup of tea but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. If I kept it on repeat for a few days, I might even upgrade the rating to a 4.
Tight production, consistent rapping, dope vibes. Solid 4.
Opens with several great classic songs that totally justify this album's status and that was making me thing I'd rate this thing a 5, but as it dragged on, there were several instances where I had to resist skipping tracks. (More specifically, the first 4 tracks are all fantastic, but much of the back half of the album is just annoying, e.g. the Jamaican one, the Twist, etc.)
Going in I have no idea what to expect --- I've never heard of this band or album. I'm guessing something vaguely punk rockish/indie from the album cover, which is probably a bad sign, but I have high hopes!
Those hopes were not immediately dashed! The intro was good! I started getting worried by track 3, and by track 5 my hopes were indeed dashed. Do I need to keep listening to this, I asked myself? "Yes, yes I do," I answered. And you know what? It paid off --- as a test of mental resilience and commitment... Just kidding, it wasn't THAT bad.
By track 6, L.A., my outlook was picking up a bit. Looks like it's the most famous song on the album and that makes sense. It's one of the most accessible (and of course by "most accessible" I mean, "least sucky").
But it was just one of a few outliers. I actually liked the track Couldn't Get Ahead. Paintwork, Petty (Thief) Lout were decent as well.
Closest thing to this that I actually like: The Modern Lovers.
