I've forgotten just how good some of these songs are: Mr. Soul--we all need to stand in front of the mirror and recite these lyrics. NY said it took 5 minutes to write, after a serious epilepsy attack, while in the hospital. He's a genius. Follows up/ends with the surreal Broken Arrow, in case you didn't get his message/theme the first time around. Haunting. Rock n Roll Woman--allegedly about Grace Slick, but really a metaphor for us all. Expecting to Fly: Once again: haunting, beautiful, can't believe there was so much infighting behind this album. Many more thoughts...I need more time with this one.
Intense. A cornerstone of prog rock. So many decades later, it still feels experimental. May have to see if a cover band tours--I would imagine this album is 100% better live.
First thought is, seriously? You're going to make me listen to Van Halen after spending yesterday with Sonic Youth? I guess it is the first album--their best--so I will go for it. Always respect a classic, trendsetter when you are able. I know these songs well, grew up with them. Eddie Van Halen is a master and genius. Love the guitar on the whole album. I think I could appreciate it more as an instrumental-only album. It's not just David Lee Roth, though I'm not really into him, and really never have been. It's the lyrics don't do it for me. Sounds funny to say for such iconic rock songs, but turn off the lyrics, and I could listen to this all day.
Four songs, almost 41 minutes long. Well, looking forward to this! Definitely banking this in the "wish I could see this live" category. It's always fun to discover something from half a century ago that you're listening to for the first time. I found myself asking, "Which way are you taking me?" They definitely rank up there with the Prog icons. Lyrics are simple but in a way enigmatic. Trippy.
I like it, though others in this genre I think are better. I need to spend more time tuned in to the lyrics, but overall, a good piece. I wonder how/why I've never known about this record.
This album came up today, and I thought, "This is gonna be a good day." Get ready, coworkers and neighbors. I'm gonna crank it.
I love the interview Spotify has with Marc Bolan on this album. He talks about how it's simple and direct. He felt like there wasn't much time to communicate with people; time is fleeting, so let's just get to it. Six years later, he dies in a car crash. It's a very charismatic collection of tunes. I didn't really know many of the songs before this, so it was a real treat to listen to the entire piece.
OK, so I read (after I listened) that critics lambasted this album and Gene Clark never recovered from it. I would say that's harsh, and sorry, Gene. I liked the album, it was enjoyable, relaxing. But is it one that I recommend someone listen to before they die? Meh. Now, after I die, sitting in Gene Clark's heavenly living room while he strums and sings along...that sounds pretty good. : )
Loved this. Need more Fleet Foxes. That's all there is to say.
Very unique sound, good for unfocused listening, and at the same time, wish I was focused on the lyrics
