It's just.... not for me. I already knew I hated "Give It Away" before listening and this is just 60+ minutes of the same energy (minus Under The Bridge and Breaking The Girl). I can see how a person could enjoy it, but that person is not me.
Used to have this album on my iTunes back when that was something that people used. It's pleasant, but few songs stand out to me. I much prefer their second album, from what I can remember.
Obviously this one is a 5. Even though I still don't connect with it personally as much as I do with "good kid, m.a.a.d. city", it's objectively an amazing album. "I" & "the blacker the berry" are suuuch bangers. Hadn't listened to this in years and ended up having it on repeat most of the day.
I can see why people enjoy it, and on some level I understand why it's good. However, it's just meh to me. I can't connect with the music at all, and it's just background noise to me. I don't dislike it, but I don't really like it either.
I just really don't like "you are the sunshine of my life", it's just so unbelievably cheesy to me, and so I'd never really given this album a chance. I still don't like it, but "maybe your baby" and, of course, "superstition" are certified bangers and the rest of the album is pretty good as well. Will listen again, will just skip the first track.
I'll keep this in my back pocket for the next time I want to sit on the back porch drinking cheap beer. Not that I ever do that, but it's nice to have the option.
