A little boring and repetitive, but I respect that Leonard Cohen was very formative for many of my favorite artists and can hear echoes of that in his work.
Hey, this is the first album of this project that’s made me want to write a novel!! Death of a Disco Dancer may have just changed my life? Every song on this album resonated with me in some way. I was superficially acquainted with The Smiths before and always enjoyed what I heard, but listening to an entire album from start to finish has hit me so much harder. I can hear SO many ways they influenced so many of my favorite bands and artists, especially from my Brit pop/rock days in the early 2000s. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that most of my favorite songs and sounds are at least a tiny bit dark (i.e. Susanne Sundfor, and some of Radiohead’s and Punch Brothers’ more experimental stuff). And while the songs on this album are very catchy and upbeat, they still have little dark underlying tones of melancholy, sadness, and disillusionment (not just lyrically). I favorited this album on Spotify, will absolutely revisit it, and look forward to exploring The Smiths’ discography more extensively!
I love Foo Fighters even though they’re a bit of a step away from my general musical comfort zone, and I’ve listened to this album before (albeit a long time ago). There are a few gems on their debut, but a lot of it gets repetitive for me, and it’s not an entire album I would just casually want to revisit. That said, I definitely appreciate this album as a beginning step towards their future albums!
Billie Holiday’s voice is absolutely beautiful, and each song by itself is a lovely experience. But listening to the album as a whole, it was very difficult to distinguish when one song ended and the next began. It was nice background music to listen to while working on projects, but I don’t think I’d choose to listen to the entire album again. I think this music is best appreciated and enjoyed in small doses.
WAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! It was very interesting to think about how far rock has come over the years. I recognized nearly every song on the album, mostly from 80’s and 90’s movies. Unfortunately that didn’t keep each song from feeling like pretty much the same song with slight differences. Also I got really tired of all of the screaming after like two songs hahahahha.
I grew up listening to a lot of 70’s albums in this psychedelic/jazz/folk fusion kind of style so this felt very much like a warm hug. I can totally see this not being everyone’s cup of tea, and the mumbling was a little ridiculous at times. But overall I loved this album and am so excited to tell my dad about it (I’m sure he’s already familiar!).
I was a little skeptical at first - I was familiar with the beginning of Aqualung (the track) but had never heard the whole song. But this album ended up being SO MUCH FUN to listen to!! When I realized it was a concept album and started to see it through the lens as an obvious big influence for some of my favorite artists like The Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens, I felt like I understood it better and was able to enjoy it thoroughly. I loved all the different instruments and styles throughout the whole album. It kept me interested and engaged and excited to explore the rest of the Jethro Tull discography!
