Californication
Red Hot Chili Peppers
This was the soundtrack to my 16th year and I remember learning all the guitar parts. Listening again now was refreshing, it still holds up today, a good mix of singalongs, funky and more thought provoking than I ever gave it credit for at the time in the slower ones

Surfer Rosa
Pixies
I’m finding it difficult to find the right words to describe Surfer Rosa. I couldn’t recommend it to anyone as a casual listen and yet I want to tell people I like it because, to me, it makes me feel cool that I’m enjoying it. It’s weird at times and great at times but I never felt like skipping a single track. Doolittle has more for a casually listen but I really enjoyed the more experimental sound of this one

Physical Graffiti
Led Zeppelin
Found this a tricky listen, I’m very familiar with LedZep I - IV but I’ve never listened to this before. First two songs didn’t grab me at all but ‘In my time of dying’ got me and took me back to what I love about them. It’s not their best in my opinion but it’s enjoyable and definitely has a more mature sense of songwriting

The Queen Is Dead
The Smiths
So this was the album selected the day after the queens death, and just seeing the cover gave me a little trepidation. I’ve always loved this album but I was worried that it would have new meaning now. Certainly, the title track left a little bad taste, but the way Morrissey delivers the references to Charles dreaming of taking over didn’t feel quite as bad as the track title. The rest of the album remains as the Smiths best work.
I’ve struggled with the Smiths over previous years due to the views of Morissey, but I’m glad I listened to this again, I’d almost forgotten how special the smiths were

Dummy
Portishead
I’m a fan of this album anyway but this is the first time I’ve really thought about why that might be. I’m in my early days with this challenge but I’m already recognising that I like music that makes me feel something. Dummy makes me feel thoughtful and introspective, it’s like an atmosphere that takes me somewhere mentally and I adore it for that

British Steel
Judas Priest
I’d never taken much time to listen to Judas Priest and only really became familiar with their hits a few years ago. I found British Steel to be enjoyable throughout, it’s fun and I never felt like I wanted to skip a track. It doesn’t set my world alight, but I’ll definitely be revisiting it as there are some great songs

Sister
Sonic Youth
This is art. It was a first listen for me, I’m a fan of a few of their later albums which I think are an easier listen. Sister is what I expected, it’s a group of confident in who they are and what they are trying to create, testing musical boundaries to see what works, and it does work. It’s cool, in the way that more conservative music tastes would not think it should ever make it onto a record. It broadens the mind. I prefer their later stuff but this was enlightening.

The Age Of The Understatement
The Last Shadow Puppets
Learnt a lot about myself with this one. As soon as I saw it, I wanted to dislike it. I think in part because when bands/artists get a lot of critical success I analyse their music more and can’t find it as enjoyable because of it. The album itself was good, the only track I really liked was ‘In my room’. Totally appreciate it’s full of well written songs and sounds good but just didn’t stand out to me

Closer
Joy Division
Not their best, I’m usually a fan so maybe I wasn’t in the right mood
