The man comes around is prime Johnny cash and prime Johnny cash reminds me of when country was music for outlaws and rebels. Cash was a well-known prison abolitionist and that shows up on the man comes around in give my love to rose, a song about a man who’s rotted his life away behind bars and finally gets out only to die and ask cash to share his love with his fiancé. Nowadays country music is littered with boot-lickers who fly private and pretend they can relate to the working class. What changed, you ask? My theory is 9/11. The U.S. government masterfully directed it’s peoples attention to terrorist groups, drugs and gangs. There was no longer a consensus of people uniting under music that critiqued the music dehumanizing institution in America, instead we started rejoicing in being American, which now means drinking beer, polishing your truck and celebrating “small town values”.
