I know this is a significant album but without knowing some of the context or doing research,. I have no idea why!
I didn't know they did the song everyday people. This makes more sense now.
Some of these are really fun vibe, but this is not always my kind of music. The extended Hendrix style guitar solos especially and not for me
Listened on the house speaker.
You know when you are looking at something significant, like the Mona Lisa or the Sistine chapel or temples in Kyoto, and you can tell its prolific and important but it's just not really your thing? That's how I feel about this album.
I wonder if I would appreciate it more if I was high or listened through headphones.
Having said that, I enjoyed
- the similarities with Cat Stephens in track 1
- part 1
- how the whole album is cohesive in its repetition of the refrains
- do you realise is a masterpiece
It's more experimental than I typically like but it's been a great listen
Obviously iconic. I don't think I am angry enough for this album. This was a difficult listen. I'm sure there is a mood for this but it is not the one I am currently in. Listened to it in the car. Would probably not put on again. Can't really dance to this unless you are head banging.
I didn't hate this! Because of its use in elevators, it felt familiar. Definitely a background music situation. Would likely be great at a party.
Listened to it in the car. Probably didn't require this level of attention
Got very excited when I saw this album!!!
I have an unfair advantage on this one given how much I listened to it when it came out.
Still holds up, I really enjoyed this.
Favourite track - doorbell. Been stuck in my head for 3 days now
Unlike any of the other albums so far, I did a deep dive on the history of this. I mainly got stuck on the album artwork which was created by Warhol and had a working zipper initially (removed in later editions as it damaged the record).
Listened to this in the car and through headphones. The entire thing is a great listen. Would put on again. My favourite song is wild horses
I never give anything 5 stars but this came close.
I know way more about Taylor swift than any other artist (and potentially my own life) so the meaning behind and impact of this album plays into my listening and I'm absolutely biased.
Still, for an album which was entirely and seamlessly pop from a previously country artist, it's very impressive. This album was the first one which Jack Antonoff worked on too which adds to my love for it. Favourite tracks: out of the woods (she builds better b bridges than engineers), wildest dreams, clean (for Imogen Heap) and new romantics
I recognised a couple of the songs and like her voice but this album as a whole felt a bit samey. I wouldn't be mad if it was on somewhere but I probably wouldn't put this on again
First reaction: oooh! I've never listened to this in full!
During listening: oh wow, this is a much longer album than I anticipated. Great beats. The transitions between songs are really smooth. Around the world and da funk are familiar.
After listening: for me, this feels more like a dj set than an album. I find it a bit monotonous at times and I'm not sure I would actively listen again. This went on for a long time.
Research notes: this was their first studio album. They gave their demo to their first record label at a rave at eurodisney which feels very French
First reaction: I've never listened to much Lenny Kravitz. I also never really think about him. Slightly surprised he made this album list
During listening:
-Transitional and harmonies are lovely. Then his voice comes in and ruins this just a little
-The instrumental solos go on forever. I do not love this kind of music.
-Fun honky tonk piano!
After listening: I didn't completely hate it but probably wouldn't listen again.
Research notes: none. Didn't feel compelled to look this up
First reaction: oooh! Yay! I'm excited about this one!
Upon listening: I really like this. The first song sets an excellent tone for the album. Life on Mars continues to give me goosebumps every time I hear it. Did the kooks get their name from this album?
After listening: this just got better as it went on. Really enjoyed this. would definitely listen again, need to listen through headphones next time.
Research notes: 4th album. Written mainly on piano (vs guitar for previous albums). Critically well received but didn't chart until after the release of his new album (which blew up). Life on mars was only released as a single 2 years after this album - wtf! The kooks did get their name from this album - that song was written for his son.
