1001 Albums Summary

I never sat down and truly listened to this legend before this opportunity. Love the old big band and jazz sounds. Makes you truly appreciate just how good, progressive, and inventive music once was in this country.

Appreciate B.B. and his majesty of the blues. I especially admire his vocals, and connected the dots between singers like him and British rock and blues singers like Robert Plant and Steve Marriott. They clearly absorbed the vocal riffs of the great blues singers like Mr. King. That being said, I am still more inclined to pick up Muddy Waters, Albert King, or Buddy Guy before I get to B.B. King

Growing up in the 1970’s, my school friends referred to me as a closet Stevie Wonder fan. That’s because we were all long haired heavy rock fans and it wasn’t cool to like Stevie. That being said, I never owned this album. Nor did I ever have the chance to listen to it in its entirety. I am familiar with a number of the tunes but listening to all of them as part of an album is awesome. I was lucky enough to have seen Stevie perform in the 1970’s in a free concert at the L.A. Street Scene. He was fantastic. I boldly profess I am officially out of the closet.

I was a progressive rock fan in my late teens when this album was released. I was not overly enthralled by the punk scene or the music, generally speaking. However, I have a greater appreciation now for The Clash and this album after giving it a thorough listening. It’s actually remarkable how the punk scene was really retrospective to the U.K. mod scene and music of the mid-60’s. Overall, it was a pleasant listening experience.

Jazz is a mystery to me. It is at once a magical expression of orchestrated chaos and a perplexing musical dialogue of toddler gibberish. Pure nonsense at times but sure beauty at others. There is a time and a place for it in my life. I just haven’t figured it out yet. lol

So a few albums ago I listened to The Clash and reflected how it reminded me of U.K. Mod rock from the 1960’s. Now The Kinks Face to Face album is generated and it to a great extent confirms that thought (at least to me). The ‘punk’ of the late 70’s and early 80’s was kind of a rehash of this rebellious mod vibe. That being said, The Kinks have some classics but this album as a whole is just okay. I have a hard time accepting it is one that one must listen to.

Epic album by an epic band. I personally have never been an intense fan of theirs but do appreciate their popular material such as Money and Comfortably Numb. At times though, their material seemed a bit dull and dragged on. I respect those who love Floyd and understand why.
