1999 by Prince

Was stoked to hear the baby from Aaliyah's "Are you that somebody" on "Delirious" Catchy but the musicality sounds very 80s to me in a dated way... might be partially my not great speakers but there's a flatness & busyness to the sounds. Like the drums in "Let's Pretend We're Married" sounded chintzy like those included in most DAWs. I can imagine these songs were pretty revolutionary in 1982 and perhaps my listen suffers from hearing imitators & later evolution of these sounds all my life. DSMR & Lady Cabdriver were pretty sick. 3.5 / 5

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Jan 08 2024

Arcade Fire is a band I had heard of but completely missed, it's been years hearing this album in particular is supposed to be an opus but I had stopped listening to new music. I was surprised that I recognized "Sprawl II (Mountains)", have heard it for years without knowing the band or name of the song. Real standout on the album for me. Overall I thought this was incredibly well-crafted, moody album, and that it wasn't for me. I think at a different time in my life, probably an adolescent in the suburbs, it would have spoken to me more. I appreciate the repeated themes, the weaving of similar lyrics throughout connecting many songs together. Not great for hyping up cardio tho. Would give a 4.25
