Track Thoughts:
Intro is an immediately recognizable beat that many could pinpoint. 8/10
VCR is a subtle track with a simple beat. Lowkey singing and nothing overwhelming. Easy to the ears. 6.5/10
Crystalized is the next track. Another near immediate recognizable song once the beat got going. More lowkey singing supports a haunting beat. Singing works in harmony to create an enjoyable song. 7.5/10
Islands is jumpy from the start in comparison to the other songs so far. The trend of lowkey singing continues with a continued focus on romance lyrics. 7/10
Heart Skips a Beat is easily one of the more vulnerable songs on the album, dealing with feelings after a breakup. The instrumentation provides a feeling of wanting more, and compliments the vibe/purpose of the song well. Easily my favorite so far. 9/10
with Fantasy, there wasn't much to this one. It was deep in sound but the quiet voices and limited production for the two minute runtime did not sell me. There is a chance I'll have to hear it again to appreciate it more. For first listen, 4.5/10.
Shelter continues what I have established to be a minimalist album in all facets. It does however have a pickup moment about a minute in with the instrumentation that culminates in a few-second break before the lyrics come back. The track focuses on trying to right your wrongs, a message that is strongly passed on during this track's length. 8/10
Basic Space is a song about sex. Filled with many metaphors, this is a smart track lyrically that follows through with the minimalist, yet jumpy, background sounds. It works for this one. Not a standout, but certainly not bad. 7/10
Infinity is a song that is slow, beginning immediately with the guitar and the slow/soft lyrics. The song being about losing connection with someone fits the bill, and makes the music behind the lyrics fit the theme so well. There is hopelessness in the lyrics. Neither refuse to give up what they had and do not want to move on. Another good song here. 8/10
Night Time is the penultimate track and starts with a starry sort of instrumentation. It ties perfectly into the name of the song. This song is hauntingly beautiful. It deals with the struggle of expressing emotions and keeping some things from a significant other. Towards the end, the instrumentation is just beautiful. Maybe my favorite so far. Another 9/10
Stars is the final track and kicks off with a simple piano and guitar combo. It is once again a haunting melody that is accompanied by introspective lyrics about a new relationship. The lyrics revolve around forming a connection on an emotional level and being patient. 8.5/10
This was an enjoyable listen and I was impressed with the consistency of the album in its sound and thematic approach. While none of the songs blew me away, there were some that I may wind up going back to in the future like Night Time and Heart Skips a Beat.
Top 3: Night Time, Heart Skips a Beat, Stars
Overall Rating: 7.5/10, 3.5/5
Thunder Road - I love the music in the background as it goes from a light piano to a bouncy track that accommodates the vocals well as the song picks up. Definitely a fun track sonically and vocally. 9/10
Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - Another fun, punchy track which tells the formation of the E Street Band. The instrumentation is so unique in this with the different sounds combining to just make an enjoyable listen. Another solid track. 8/10
Night - A well told story within this song about a blue collar worker who waits for the night to go out and search for love. The instruments, once again, don’t fail to deliver an electric performance. 8/10
Backstreets - Love the start of the track with the piano and slow build up until the vocals come in. Was not expecting the vocal switch up with the passionate lyric sharing but it works here with the drums and guitar taking center stage in the background. Thought the song ran a little too long but that doesn’t take away from it at all. I’d give this another 7.5/10
Born to Run - Another sonically fun and charming track, with lyrics that match it about escaping the city with a special someone. Reminds me of someone in their youth wanting to leave their hometown, but it never happens. 9/10
She’s the One - Love how the guitar and drums came in for the second verse and the vocals pick up to match the newly-found energy. Lyrics clearly describing when you’ve found the one and all it would take is one kiss from that one person. Seems to be the central theme of this album: finding the one and also leaving with them to somewhere else. 7/10
Meeting Across the River - Very lowkey track that focuses more on telling a story rather than building up instrumentation. Nothing wrong with that as this album as already had its fair share of great instruments. I enjoyed the story this song shared. Main character of the song has clearly been in some trouble. 7/10
Jungeland - Was not ready for a 10 minute track to close off this album. But I’m not complaining. Wow. The saxophone, after making its presence felt throughout, gets a shining moment of over 2 minutes here to split the song in half and change the feelings over to a more despair-filled mood. Beautiful song. 10/10
Final Thoughts: This was a great rock album and I’m sad I didn’t get to hear it earlier. So many moments where the vocals didn’t have to shine because the instruments took the spotlight. Still a tremendous work.
Top 3: Jungleland, Thunder Road, Born to Run
Overall Rating: 8.5/10, 4.5/5
I’m listening to this one early, so no track by track review. However, will update with top 3 and overall conclusion after finishing
Update: This ~30 minute, 10 track album was tight from start to finish. It didnt feel as if there was any filler which you’d find in many albums today. The overall feeling elicited from this work is just a groovy one, perfect for the time it was released. Songs like People Get Ready, Come Back Baby, Ain’t No Way and Since You’ve Been Gone really shine on the first listen. The instruments powerfully enhance the already beautiful vocals and provide a stunning atmosphere of an album.
Top 3: People Get Ready, Ain’t No Way, Chain of Fools
Overall Rating: 8.5/10, 4.5/5
Not awful, not great. Was an album with songs
Liked this one at first but as it went on, I just didn’t care for the sound. Can’t really do a track ranking because none of the songs really stood out to me. Not an *awful* album but there’s def better out there.
Overall: 2/5
