"Django Django" was one of the bands I meant to listen to for a long, long time. So when 1001albumsgenerator revealed the album to me, I couldn't wait any longer. I wasn't disappointed!
Now let's click the repeat button and play "Default" nonstop. ;)

An intriguing one. Clearly there's an amazing producer/electronics tech in n the band, but the sad thing is there is no songwriter in the band. As a result you have these lovely exciting ideas whizzing about, but nobody to refine them into a song you can care about.
Live a cross between Belle and Sebastian and LCD Soundsystem, but lacking the melodic loveliness or wit.

It’s a bold move to depict the landfill that copies of your record will end up in on the cover of your debut record.
I kid, I kid….
This is just The Beta Band for the 2010’s, right?
Ok, okay…let’s get serious.
This is an alright record, kind of psychedelic, kind of poppy, but it has a problem that I find in a lot of modern music that really detracts from listening for me. It has a lack of realistic energy - you can tell everything on this record is heavily quantized in a DAW, lined up and synced perfectly in time…machine-like. It feels lifeless to me as a result, devoid of personality or any flair for originality.

This was pretty good, though I'd hardly call it essential listening. It kept my interest throughout and the production was very strong. The blend of styles here is pretty unique and I'm guessing that's why it was on this list. Was this album bigger in the UK? I have no memory of it being big here in 2012.

Repetitiveness in these songs definitely has a lot of charm and makes them super catchy and fun, but over 40 minutes of that somehow feels like too much. Tiring.

Loved this when it came out 11 years ago and was happy to see it pop up here for me today.
Quirky & groovy without feeling forced, and consistently good all the way through. Love an album with an introduction track too, so this will be 5⭐

Crack open the craft beer, let the Aperol Spritz flow, we’ve a current-millennium, Mercury Prize-nominated album that doesn’t sound like a winning round of London A&R bullshit bingo, that diarrhoea. This might be the only click-track proud, indie disco LP I’ve heard so far that lives comfortably within its cyborg, schoolboy choir Brit bric-a-brac cul-de-sac.

It’s like the postal service made some trippy acid pop. Excellent electronic composure but the falsetto harmonization can get a little tired. Lord of half hashed ideas that sometimes stick, and sometimes don’t. That’s the beauty of music after all, they’re being creative and sometimes something fresh and wonderful can be created. However, only some of it hits for me. As the album progresses it resembles new age sea shanties where the harmonies float on waves of consistent rhythms mixed with well placed instrumentals. Nothing captured my attention, but I did enjoy a few songs. Overall, a bland record for my taste, mostly due to the vocals not taking any chances.

This is one of those bands I've only heard about but never checked out, even though I would've been the perfect demographic when this came out in 2012. I was pretty stoked seeing this pop up this morning and, boy, it did not disappoint one bit. Pure energy and vibrancy without feeling too over the top.

I think WOR is my favourite song of the decade. I started off unsure, then beguiled, but when that surf rock rhythm started pounding, I was enthralled.

I went in totally ignorant of this record and artist. At first I was getting Kraftwerk vibes but then the harmonized vocals kicked in which remind me of some sixties groups like The Hollies, The Association, or The Byrds.
All said, I find myself drawn to records that successfully fuse cold/mechanical machine noises with warm/human musicality. Django Django certainly scratches that itch but when it veers into the longer, jammier songs I admit to getting bored. I love Stereolab but they are guilty of the same tendency. I think some editing of the longer tunes would be an improvement.

Maybe it's because I was forced to listen to this on YouTube, but every song sounded like it would be for an ad promoting a 'revolutionary' new crypto exchange platform, a hemp inspired make up cleanser or some green fuel for future generations. That bored me. Needs more grit.

That’s a 5.
It's a little hard to place this album in a box, but I’ll try to give some sort of genre descriptor here: what would happen if you got the Beach Boys to collaborate with the White Stripes & Daft Punk? Even with something as intriguing as that, I don’t think I’ve really covered the extent of genres that this album blends so effectively & so mesmerizingly well. A little bit of psychedelic rock, a lot of electronica, & certainly some pop, but all tinged with rhythms that feel outside of their genres, never staying content to ride within any singular mood. There are tracks that feel like Kraftwerk, some that feel like they’re building towards a Western-y vibe, and others that would fit into modern sports anthems, ala “Seven Nation Army”. I can’t state enough how much variety this album has, and more importantly, I’m not sure I can really convey how good it does at making at all feel so coherent.
I’ll give my praise to the vocals; that Beach Boys comparison might feel slightly extreme, but the way they harmonize is definitely trying to evoke “Pet Sounds”, and it’s highly effective. Instrumentally, I think every track finds a really strong rhythm as a base & builds upon it in a way that gives a super strong sense of progression, save for “Zumm Zumm” (just a little long), & “Love’s Dart”, but that’s fine because of the storytelling nature of that track. Oh, right, lyrics; pretty good lyrics across the board here, but if you want to just go with the flow on this album, the vocal rhythms & structures are so easy to pick up on that I’m not sure you need the lyrics to enjoy this. It enhances the tracks a bit, especially on some of the story-driven ones, but they’re not too necessary.
Overall, while it might be just a little bloated at 48 minutes (there’s no bad tracks at all, just a bit of fatigue from the constant sense of energy this album brings & a slight overlap in subject matter), it still flew by, & I think it’s a great fucking album. I’m glad this is on the list, because I would’ve never found it otherwise, and I think I might need to listen to some more Django Django, since this is their only album here. This style is appealing as hell to me, and I really hope there’s more stuff like this on the list. It’s an easy 5 for me, and another win for a Mercury Prize nominee; they’re REALLY good at their jobs.

So... the is art-rock. Or art-pop. Or something like that. So this is what kids were listening to in 2012, eh?
Is it a modern mix on 1960's psychedelic pop? That's what it sounds like to me, a modern revivalist of that era. And I'm not a big fan of that genre of music in the first place, so it was probably never likely that I was going to like this. Perhaps I'm just too old. But more likely there just isn't anything that attracts me here.

I wonder when Django Unchained came out if these guys thought they had a bio pic made of them. Nahhh I doubt it.
So on to this album. It’s one of the few that I’m at a loss for words on the good side of things.
This is good. They get a follow from me.
I hope the other albums don’t let me down.
Seriously though, I can’t put my finger on the genre or who they sound like. They are mostly in a place of their own in the pop alt world I’d guess.
I’m also feeling generous. This can’t reach OK Computer but in its own light, it’s good enough

I absolutely loved listening to this album! I've never heard of this band before.
A lot of sonic texture on this album. It's a pleasing mix of electronic and acoustic instruments with both digital and analog sound effects. Often creating an almost ASMR effect in my earbuds.
Each song has an upbeat hook-laden vocal melody with tight harmonies. Always danceable never repetitive. Both retro and futuristic at the same time. A fun discovery.
Favorite song: "Life's a Beach." And, I'm definitely adding "Wor" to my favorite apocalyptic songs playlist!

I'm torn because I really enjoyed this album, but at the same time it's a shame that from all the albums that came out in 2012 it has to be a british rock-album. If there is something this lists doesnt need it's more rock in english. Anyways, like I said, I really liked the album, so I will rate it well, I just wanted to leave this for the protocol!

Django Django’s eponymous debut, both the band and the album were new to me. For a first effort, it sounds remarkably confident and playful.
The album thrives on a delightful blend of genres: electronica, rock, and '60s-influenced pop, managing to sound simultaneously retro and 'current'. The production and mix is clear.
The vocal work is a key element of the album's identity. The delivery is generally understated, relying on doubled tracks to create harmonies and utilising intriguing vocal effects to add texture rather than just volume. A brilliant example of this is "Waveforms". Vocally, the track is reminiscent of The Dandy Warhols, possessing that same cool, detached, yet highly melodic swagger. "Silver Rays" also features that distinctive 'Dandys' vocal aesthetic.
The record is melodic but is also peppered with charming eccentricities. A prime example is "Zumm Zumm", which captures the band's quirky side.
Standout tracks were: "Default" (a real foot tapper), and "WOR" (great surf rock guitar sound). Django Django's debut is an enjoyable listen that I may be delving into again. Four stars.
1. "Introduction" (3/5)
2. "Hail Bop" (4/5)
3. "Default" (5/5)
4. "Firewater" (4/5)
5. "Waveforms" (3/5)
6. "Zumm Zumm" (3/5)
7. "Hand of Man" (3/5)
8. "Love's Dart" (4/5)
9. "WOR" (5/5)
10. "Storm" (4/5)
11. "Life's a Beach" (4/5)
12. "Skies Over Cairo" (3/5)
13. "Silver Rays" (4/5)

A series of high-energy psychedelic pop bops, with happy operatic vocals, nonsensical repeating lyrics, whimsical Krautrock-esque drones, space synths, lots of reverb, and instruments (especially percussions) that evoke 60s psychedelia. I'm also hearing garage blues influence from contemporaries like Black Keys in songs "Firewater." It's a very fun record with only a few lackluster song ideas that don't leave much of an impact.
Favorites: Default, Waveforms, WOR, Life's a Beach

Wilco meets Daft Punk via Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, take your pick, all through a prism of late 1960's pop. And you know what? It's FINE. One could even say such a mix works. For them. But I doubt this album is going to get anyone laid anytime soon. And frankly that's all I'm looking for right now. Ask me again tomorrow and my standards could change.

Album #: 223
first impressions: I remember this band being Pitchfork darlings around the time of this album. At the time, I remember thinking Pitchfork was unbearably pretentious. So I assumed this band would be, too. A bit surprisingly, it sounds like an amalgamation of other bands they liked at the time that were sort of on the more mainstream edge: the XX, Fleet Foxes, and LCD Soundsystem. An interesting mix of 2010's indie/electronic/world music together with a little bit of country/60's singer-songwriter flair.
after listening through: Really interesting production/blends of genres; good background/working music but also fun/varied enough to listen to as a standalone activity. But a little too long.
post-reading reviews/wiki: I would not have guessed that this band is British because it feels... relatively seasoned (iykyk.) I'm not surprised to see comparisons to Animal Collective, another band I rejected at the time of this album's release bc I felt that their sound was too weird and people who liked them were just pretentious at the time. Now I kind of vibe with it, but it's not something I see myself obsessing over a decade too late.
recommended for: fans of Tune-Yards, James Blake, Orville Peck, Devendra Banhart, stomp n clap.

clicked on the link to listen in Apple Music. It brought up the 10th anniversary reissue that had remixes and for some reason the original was not available so I listened to remixes before noticing my good. Found the original and had to start over, was bummed because I enjoyed the remixes. The original? It's okay electronic music. But it continues the author(s) bias for unoriginal British music that has no place on a list like this.
3/5.

Cheerful modern psychedelic pop. I hear some 60's influences, including The Beach Boys here and there, in addition to more recent influences like Animal Collective. I dig it. I’ll keep this band on the back burner and listen to more of them. I appreciate a band that goes out of their way to make every song sound unique.
I also like when an album cover immediately signals what kind of music this is going to be.
——
I get a kick out of how yesterday’s album was Nas’ “Illmatic” featuring “Life’s a Bitch” and today we have an album with a song called “Life’s a Beach.” (And personal fun fact: the first screenplay I ever wrote was called “Life’s a Beach” — it wasn’t very good but that phrase will always hold a special place in my heart.)

Interesting album cover. It's striking and I'm assuming it's some kind of mixed media?
I love the intro and the seamless transition into the second track. I've never heard of this band before now so it's fun to go into an album blind and have no idea at all what the style will be. Even more so as this is a more recent release.
Interesting sound. Indie rock-first but there's a lot of influences in there; I think I'm hearing some Beach Boys. Producing is cool too, lots of intriguing layers.
The consistent adjective that's popping up is "interesting". It's not music that is really "out-there" but I keep noticing songwriting and production choices that aren't completely the norm for this style of music and I appreciate that. It's adding some nice depth. It made me enjoy the album and the only downsides were that it didn't have many big standout moments. Each track would have it's own idea and live inside of that idea, but then not really take my interest to the next level. "Defaults" is probably my favorite of the bunch.
It's nicely diverse and yet still cohesive. They'll have tracks that have electronic drums and instruments in the foreground ("Waveforms", "Zumm Zumm", "Hand of Man"), a delta-blues Nick Drake inspired song like "Firewater", then an straightforward indie rocker track like "Life's A Beach" that you would hear on a Vampire Weekend album.
It's cool and eclectic. As this was their debut album, I feel the need to see their direction after this one. Lots of promise. 3.3/5 I think.

To start with, this album has one of the most important qualities an album could have on this list and that’s being completely unique. I didn’t look into the artists other work yet to see if this album is a one off/ if every album sounds like this/or this album is really just a gem hidden in the rough. It’s so unique and different. If I had to simplify it I’d say it’s like a percussion focused electronic album. Super inventive and mildly repetitive, this album totally had my attention from the get go and I saved most if not every song on the album. It’s super fun, has a great cover, and I’ll definitely be looking into their other work cause this album just works so well for some reason. Seriously if you like electronic music you definitely gotta check this out, it’s super cool.

37/1001. I started this project to encounter interesting artists like these, which I have missed for once reason or another. Back in 2012 I was probably to busy looking for cool cumbia, scouting through brazil bossa and beats, had a trip or two across african music plateaus, while re-re-visiting electronic 80s obscurities. So, I guess I missed quite a lot what was happening in the indie-/alternative-/ art music scene. Super duper nice that these kinds of things pop up here on this list as well: sonic exploration, adventures in digital production, retroesque harmony arrangements á la beach boys / Brian Wilson, stereolabish synth grooves, FourTet / Animal Collective sound collages, Tame Impala indie attitude... fun and interesting, I don't mind that song writing is rather simple or that perhaps too many hours have been spent on a computer to create these pieces. I want more!

Unlike anything else I’ve heard so far. Uniquely intriguing. Was hooked from the introduction. Big fan of the funky instrumentals and dissonant harmonies. Such a groovy, jungle-like vibe. Also has a nostalgic, dreamy feel that reminds me of summer.

Awesome album! Really fun overall and felt incredibly unique! Great instrumentals and fitting vocal work.
'Default' slaps heavy, easy fave pick.

Surprised by this one. Solid album throughout. Repetitive beats that get built on but nothing too abrasive. Easy to listen to.

Wow! One of the real surprises! This is adjacent to the 3 EP’s by the Beta Band, but with nicer harmonies. Bonus there’s a dub version by Mad Professor that is stellar.

I had never listened to the whole album but recognised a few songs. I love the 70s vibe, even though it’s a contemporary album. Great tunes and harmonies.

Hey look, it’s the album that started this whole thing for me!
There is (or was) a user on Reddit going through the list manually, posting his reviews of every album in a subreddit he made for himself. He would cross-post his reviews to the bands’ subreddits, which is how I came to learn about the book. Django Django is my favourite band and I was surprised to hear they made it to a list of must-hear albums, since they aren’t well-known. A couple years prior, I had made my own list of famous albums I’d never listened to, so the idea of a list of 1001 albums was tempting, but daunting.
Well here I am, 780-something albums later. I thought it would have been perfect if this was the final album I got generated, but I’ll take any opportunity to listen to this. It’s one of my all-time favourites.

This is one of my go-to albums for a mood lift. Love it. DD are also one of many bands I love whose name is a repeated word. So there we are

I have seen this name a bunch but never really dove in. A few songs in and I'm super bummed I didn't because I am boppin to this. Getting some solid Animal Collective vibes from this.
This had the perfect amount of strangeness to it while still being super melodic and groovy. Big fan. Unfortunately it seems like this is by far their best album but I will absolutely be back.

Indie pop, neo-psychedelia. What an oddball of an album. Don't think I've personally ever heard anything quite like it, and it was quite a breath of fresh air compared to some the albums I've been getting recently. Super poppy electronica with a psychedelic twist, this album was full of catchy songs. Great vocal harmonies, all I strunents were really strong as well although the real standout for me was the synth. The lyrics were all pretty goofy and nonsensical but that really added to the silly fun vibes. The only real thing holding it back for me was the length, I think it overstays its welcome by just a hair. Overall a great fun album that I've already recommended to friends.
Will revisit, it's just too fun.

Some of the vocal effects remind me of the Kids Learning Tube videos about our solar system’s planets. And of my more favored video about the dwarf planets. Great videos for kids and adults alike.

I learned that term dwarf planet was solidified after astronomists discovered Eris. That led to a Wikipedia investigation: Eris, which is bigger than Pluto (pouring one out for you my long lost planet buddy), was found in 2005. I also learned that the 9 planet crowd are just sentimentalists. In the 1800s, there were 20+ objects considered planets before “asteroid” was a thing.
Rabbit hole over. Django Django is a refreshing blend of electronica, rock, and art. This is a stand out album.

This album had a nice feel to it. The first listen was good, but the second listen while I was outside doing some yard work really hit.
