Really enjoyed this, though it did feel like it went on a bit at times. Strong album nonetheless, so close to giving it a 5 but it has skips so I can’t do it
Stand out songs:
Personal Jesus
Enjoy the silence (one of my favourite songs of all time to be fair)
Story of a bitter heartbroken man trying to move on, the pain personified through the top class vocals. The vocals show similarity to Elvis melodically backed up by backing vocals that wouldn’t be out of place in an early Beatles song. A great album with short, to the point songs leaving no room to feel bored during the 35 minutes. Great listen
Never been a huge fan of ambient electronic music so I really struggled with this. Could not get into it but would accept that does not make it a bad album. Just not for me
I gotta admit this was entertaining, high energy with blood pressure raising music accompanied by hilarious lyrics with occasional hooks. But there’s only so many stars a 15 min 3 chord punk record should be allowed
Big feel good album with some great bars on it, insane basslines and good use of samples. Thoroughly enjoyed, definitely will have this on in the summer
Stand out songs
- Freedom
- React
- Thin line
Decent album, great musicianship but it didn’t feel particularly stand out or impressive
Stand out songs:
Strange
It’s the end of the world
This was a fun album, some good strong songs in there. Good songwriting but quite niche in its sound. Stand out songs:
Connection
2:1
This was an entertaining album. Instrumentally all 3 members are top class. Vocally I’ve never been a massive fan of Geddy’s voice, but this album was a bit more listenable as he had a more Robert Plant approach to melody which I much prefer. But the thing with Rush and prog in general is while being a fun listening experience, I never feel the need to rush (lol) back to listen again. Great experience with no stand out songs because it’s basically a demonstration of great musicality as oppose to songs to put on repeat. Nothing but respect for the band but as far as an album goes I can’t give it a much higher rating due to lack of a need to listen again
Enjoyed the album, surprised the genre is rock. Had a lot of soul and jazz elements the musicianship was very high quality, and the voice was great
Really didn’t give me much, feel like it blended in as background music at times. The moog raga was near unlistenable I had to fight hard not to skip that. Towards the end I liked goin’ back
Harmonically the album was very familiar, but given the year it came out that might just be because people have copied this style. I don’t know, but I don’t feel an urge to listen again
I hope I never hear this album again. Sounds like music made by people mid crazy acid trip for others on a peak acid trip.
Unfortunately I am sober, and really struggled to appreciate it
Some occasional cool jazz sections which have given it a slightly higher score.
No stand out songs because
I liked it, sometimes would be properly enjoying it, other times just not getting it. For example there’s some great use of samples especially from news clips and speeches. But then there’s some bits where it’s straight up over excessive with no pay off. Also found myself checking how many songs were left which is never a good sign. This was a good album though, but just good
Stand out songs:
Burn Hollywood burn
Power to the people
Fight the power
Amazing album especially for its time. Really interesting changes almost never felt bored, drummer was pulling out some fucking beats - great listen.
Feel like this should be a 5, but despite enjoying listening to the album I won’t be rushing back to hear it again. I think 5 stars should be reserved for albums that I want to put on and listen to again and again. This felt more like going to Thorpe park, I had fun but probs won’t be back for a couple of years. It still is a very very high 4 though
Stand out songs:
21st century schizoid man
The court of crimson king
Neil Young has been such a comfort listen for me the past few years, this hasn’t been my favourite album of his. Some songs are a bit too weird for me, the last song for example which I found myself checking how long was left multiple times. But there’s some great lyrical and instrumental highs which I really enjoyed. This type of music always makes me feel warmed up and a bit more ok with life lol
Stand out songs:
Cinnamon girl
Round and round (it won’t be long)
Truly one of my favourite albums of all time. I remember hearing it’s too late for the first time a few years ago and hunting the album down to listen. From start to finish it’s an amazing album, great songwriting with great melody throughout. Love love love this album
Standout songs:
I feel the earth
It’s too late
You make me feel
Unable to finish
Some really cool instrumentation which I would think “fuck yeah, that’s a sick bit” and then they’d just play it over and over for two minutes. Death threat was a great example of this. I feel like these guys are great producers, and would be great to have in the writing room because some of the parts are incredible. But as far as song structure goes I just don’t get it
I’m a huge Beatles fan so I’m disappointed at my reaction to this. But it just felt like I was awkwardly sitting in on a therapy session for John Lennon. It’s like he wrote the songs in the therapy session and hasn’t changed them at all, just let they stay rough and unfinished as far as structure and melody go. But the Cohen-esc song God and songs towards the end are much stronger, pulling the score of this album up
Stand out songs
Give peace a chance (great song but goes on too long)
Instant Karma! (Actually really liked this song)
Working class hero
I’ve always struggled with the doors, and feel bad for that because I know that they’re such a hugely influential band. But I’ve tried to restart this album 6 times now and got bored every time. Maybe it’s my tik tok brain, but I just kept getting irritable and wanting more/something different. The musicality is great, Jim Morrison is an icon in his own right with and amazing voice and poetic lyrics (most of the time). But I just didn’t want to listen.
Time to move on and try another album I think, feels harsh to rate it 1 when I know it’s not a BAD album, but not being able to finish due to boredom definitely puts it at a low score
