At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters

So boring. Every song sounds the same. No build or variety. Not a single song that was enjoyable. I can understand that this may have significance and was an influence for better music, but it is really boring when listened to 60+ years later.

While its legacy may be tied to the success and longevity of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the quality of the other songs elevate this album to a classic. From angry (“Death on Two Legs”) to flamboyant (“Seaside Rendezvous”), sentimental (“You’re My Best Friend”) to somber (“‘39”); this album covers a wide range emotion and style while still maintaining Queen’s theatrical flair.

An interesting album. I loved how much variety there was with the vocals. The beats are nice and weighty, and the instrumentation is unique from song to song. However, it just feels kinda boring overall. Like, the songs are good while they are on, but they don’t stick very well after listening. I’ll probably throw some of the songs (“Unfinished Symphony,” “Safe From Harm,” “Be Thankful for What You’ve Got,” & “Five Man Army”) on my giant playlist for variety and call it a day.

Look - I’m not trying to be inflammatory here, but this album was so boring. Not to say it is bad musically, but this album could’ve removed a ton of bloat and would have been better for it. A 40 minute album containing “Kashmir” “Down By the Seaside” and “Night Flight” (and others I s’pose) would have resulted in a tighter album worth revisiting. As of now, I likely won’t revisit it.

Had only heard “Hallelujah” (which is amazing), and I’m glad I listened to the rest of the album. Standouts: “So Real,” “Mojo Pin,” “Eternal Life,” and “Lover, You Should Have Come Over.” Did not care for Corpus Christi Carol though. 4/5
