definitely an influential album, but if it were any longer Brian Johnsons voice would grow stale. Some instrumentals sound very similar but it is still enjoyable
was cool
first song I've definitely heard before on Officeworks radio, the album is giving me heavy 80s pop rock vibes I'm not sure what the official genre name is but its probably just brit rock. first song is wayy too long tbh.
track two: im surprised this isnt called i want my own tv. lyrically havent been impressed yet. that opening riff is iconic af and probably an improvement over track one. makes me think of the home depot theme for some reason. this is definitely better than track 1 but i think its been overplayed for me personally. i think the cowbell is what really gives it the tradie vibe. classic 8os rock slow fade out
3: the electric organ at the start is really cool. but again this song has been overplayed for me, specifically either on the officeworks radio or in bunnings advertisements because i cant shake the tradie associations. thats not a rip on it btw its still nice but. have to admit this one is pretty catchy.
4: the jazzy undertones at the start are really nice with that melodic piano, the trumpet and slow hi hat. so far my favourite song. when the sax kicks in the song becomes really nice. to be honest i am not paying the most attention to the lyrics because im doing homework but they seem better on this song. I wasnt expecting this from the album
5: this one also starts off sorta ballad-y and more relaxed with the shakers and the guitar arpreggios are cool. this track is a whopping 8 minutes hope its worthwhile. so far its an ok track but it isnt getting me excited about anything. just sorta a mellow 6 minutes which is fine but not going in my playlist. this album feels very pub-rock very cold chisel
6:wtf is with the kabuki ahh flute at the start. i love it. the weird percussion that sounds electric but bordeline acoustic is cool. this song gets to the meat and potatoes straight away. the trumpets once the verse picks up are cool. song closes the way it starts and the crickets are cool. solid but i lost interest in the middle a little
7: western ahh guitar at the start. got me walking in saloons and starting fights and shit. the beat drops are cool but overall this album isnt my usual taste, its a perfectly good album just not for me. honestly forgot this song
8: this ones aight too, i dont have much new to add.
9: the opening with the storms and such is really cinematic before the melody kick in sounding very western again. i like this one though. the choir stuff going on in the back is cool. the electric organs around the 6 minute mark are really cool. and we go for the classic 80s rock fade out
Favourite tracks: Your latest trick, Brother in arms, so far away
Least favourite: Money for nothing (controversial take but personally ive heard it too much)
overall 5/10
prediction: album seems to have heavy environmental influences with things such as DDT, freedom, I am somebody and acetate prophets. power in numbers and the album cover refers to protest and i believe this will be a rock album
this is: reggae influences? this is more of an intro/prelude so theres not a whole lot to say. the record sounds are nice and the double bass is cool. the lead in to freedom is crazy
freedom: heads boppin. the soulful vocals are cool, they sound choppy like theyve been sampled. sounds like this could be a hip hop album with reggae influences
if only you knew: very jazzy. sounds like a tribe called quest. this album is 100% about the civil rights movement. this song is really cool. the piano riff is punch and nice. the chorus of rappers is so cool. the flute is a littleeee annoying but it still adds to the atmosphere. this album shows promise lyrically and i think that will be a core element. added to my playlist. crazy segway
Break: WE PUT QUALITY FIRST, the lyrics here are powerful and the playing with the record scratches are really cool.
React: interlude but its experimental
A day at the races: music power. i love the announcer at the start of these songs. the bass is really sick. the flow from the rappers is sooo tribe reminiscent and its cool. reference to grandmaster flash's 'the message'
remember his name: crazy transitions and interludes. the phone sound effects are cool. insane title drop at the end 'his name is death'
what's golden: very very crunchy bass, the wham on the organ is sick. little hints of brass. and much like the other songs the flow is nice and similar to a tribe called quest. cool record scratching the music ha music section is really cool and jazzy.
thin line : cool and choppy, the intro instrumentals are villainous, DOOM style. the running guitar is nice around 1 min or before. politically conscious lyrics while still being sonically interesting. chorus is catchy
after school special: im a sucker for these real life conversation interludes, they make the story seem more genuine and organic.
High Fidelity: the wind instrument or whatever it is sounds nice and reminds me of DOOMS the mouse and the mask.
sum of us :
DDT: this interlude is really cool. the interludes on this album are all hits
one of them : crazy transition. that piano is very dark sounding. lyrically this is very cool but I don't fw the beat. nwa reference is sick. the ending of this song is funny
Hey: wtf is this start and why is it good. the piano bouncing between left and right channels is the distinctive feature of this track and its cool.
I am somebody: tuned out a little tbh but the lyrics are cools and the trumpet sounding thing is cool. parts of it are very soul sounding which is cool.
acetate prophets: honestly it's OK but the jungle-y beat isn't for me. when the beat switches up it becomes better but that takes 3 minutes. some Spanish influences here. Japanese ahh guitar
Favourites: Break, a day at the races, whats golden, hey
Least favourite: one of them, acetate prophets
8/10
deny everything- just annoying tbh 1/10
I just want some skank - guitars sound OK but the vocal delivery is not it 2/10
Beverly Hills - honestly this style of music may just genuinely not be for me I can't stand the edge, life is so much more beautiful than he says. 0/10
operation - I like the guitars here kinda the lyrics are boring and corny 3/10
back against the wall - vocals ruin everything else like the prior songs. the broken glass sounds terrible -1/10 God there's still 10 minutes left
wasted - mid asfff -2/10
behind the door - I don't think this album has enough variety, and it isn't good enough at what it does to warrant it 0/10
world up my ass - lyrics kinds on beat here , man listening to this album is worse than subjugation myself to cbt
paid vacation - the lyrics are miserable, guitar is same, drums are the same too. shocked this is so loved.
don't care - this song is just like the name, and I also don't care about it 1/10
live fast die young - ... 0/10
what's your problem -... 0/10
group sex - surprisingly the only somewhat erotic song of the album and it even fails at that 0/10
red tape - the drums at the start are actually OK 2/10
favourite - operation
least favourite- all
0/10
Planet Telex - the guitar riffs with that echo sound otherworldly. the falling chord progression towards the chorus are nice. real tone setter for this album. the droning sounds at the end are similar to what they use on ok computer 8.8/10
The Bends - the titular track. guitar goes hard like usual. "the bends" refers to a sickness diver's get ad they rapidly arise, similar to the pressure Thom feels following up the success of creep 9/10
High and Dry - I wrote a lot for this but it didn't save 9.1/10
Fake Plastic Trees - talks about faking your emotions in life and particularly in relationships and how it isn't sustainable, comparing it to Styrofoam, an artificial material that when broken can't be fixed 9.3/10
Bones - nice transition. most punchy song so far. talks about the fear of aging. 8.8/10
(Nice Dream) - I really like the acoustic guitar and fret sliding to open this one. the grunge tone on the guitar is something they expand on in ok computer. the fact that the song title is in brackets implies that it's probably not real, and if we are to believe the narrative Thom puts forward that's probably true then that makes sense. lyrically this track is minimalist but it still paints a clear picture 9.5/10
Just - seems to be talking about a toxic influence, also self destructive behaviour talking about suicide. this is most likely the heaviest track on the record. 8.8/10
My Iron Lung - this could be my favourite track from the album which is ironic because it's about the immense pressure they feel due to creep. how they are grateful for it blowing up as it did, their 'Iron lung' but Wish to move elsewhere artistically. the don't want to be known as the creep band which is unfortunate. so they emulate a lot of creep stylistically here while trying to talk about their disdain for it, especially how at this point it is the only thing keeping them alive. an iron lung, while necessary for survival is very constraining to live in. much like how they feel about creep. (better than creep/10).
Bullet Proof ... I Wish I Was - I also really like this song. there isn't as much to say about the lyrics here, they aren't as cryptic. Thom wishes he was stronger emotionally. the harmonising vocals in the second chorus are a nice addition. they don't fully harmonise though which adds to the theme 9.4/10
Black Star - talks about dealing with someone who has depression. black Star is an intangible object, and the act of blaming it all on it reflects someone not taking accountability for their own actions. a scapegoat if you will. eventually the protagonist leaves this person but us unable to function himself and collapses into the same illness. the bass in this song is really cool, and Thom is always very passionate. this is another night time driving song, except you are on a train speeding through a subway.
. 9.1/10
Sulk - another song about depression, we get the point Thom man you need therapy. apparently the lyrics refer to a mass shooting in England but some lines were removed to avoid relation to curt cobains suicide. 8.7/10
Street Spirit (Fade Out) - quote by Thom regarding this song. it hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. this is without a doubt radioheads darkest song, referring to the futility of life and the inevitability of death, however Thom offers one solution in the end... love. 9.35/10
Favourites: My Iron Lung, Fake Plastic Trees, bulletproof ... I Wish I was, (Nice Dream)
Least Favourites: I genuinely don't think there is a bad song on this album but if I had to pick worst it's Sulk.
9.2/10
So where were the spidersss🗣🗣🔥🔥
favourites: moonage daydream, soul love, ziggy stardust, starman
least: they're all good but I'm not a big fan of suffragette city
ziggy played his guitarrrrr...
THE g funk album. snoop is an amazing lyricist and storyteller. The bass is killer. crazy reference to biggie in lodi dodi followed by the sugar hill gang reference. super groovy and rhythmic album
