1001 Albums Summary

Thought it just sounded like "the" bossa nova sound, I guess this is where it comes from lol. Was surprised and unsurprised to recognize some excerpts. Big props to the musicianship from everyone. Love the title charlie byrd gave his one song: "Somba Dees Days." For being recorded in a church, it's got super clean/tight recordings and a very pleasant mix. 2 stars for musicianship and production.

soul music never really cut *all* the way through to me. I always figured there was just that generational divide that makes a lot of "oldies" feel impenetrable too. I thought I was gonna have to remove a star for that reason, but it's too god damn good.

very coherent album, to the point of being a little same-y. they get some cool sounds, particularly that panicked guitar tone. it's really in my style but I end up wishing it had a little more bite. I like a lot of the writing too but its ultimately a little hard to stay invested throughout the album. its like 2.5 straight-down-the-middle star

I can feel the degree of feeling and the freshness of the sound... like, I can hear the accomplishment of refining/mastering something unique. And that is pretty cool. It's sonically pleasing between the musical jazziness and production technique. Something major about its representation of a pretty specific era is lost on me. I like it but also can't have all of it.
