Starting off strong! I already knew this album's biggest hits but hadn't heard the majority. I also had no idea Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" sampled "Pastime Paradise" from this album. I love learning things like that.
Favorite songs: "As, "Sir Dike", "All Day Sucker", "Saturn"
I wasn't as familiar with this album as I am with some of his others, but it was a quick listen as all of the songs are under 3 minutes. Right off the bat, I realized most of these songs are covers of Black R&B musicians. While I like his vocals, I prefer the original versions. Considering his sound came directly from the Black musicians of and before his time, the title 'King of Rock and Roll' doesn't seem fit.
That being said, I'll still choose a favorite song; "Blue Moon".
Although I definitely enjoy some Elton John songs (and his image as a whole), I wasn't very drawn to this album. "Tiny Dancer" is a hard act to follow and remains my favorite song off the album. Honorable mentions to "All the Nasties" and "Rock Me When He's Gone" (which I think only got added when the Deluxe Edition was released).
Who knows though, maybe it'll grow on me! And for whatever reason, I like the simplicity of the album cover.
I love Bowie's music. I'm glad I got this as today's album so I could sit down and listen to it all the way through (although it is pretty short). I didn't realize Bowie covered "Across the Universe" on this album so that was interesting to hear. Nothing particularly jumped out at me besides "Fame" and "Young Americans", which I was already a big fan of.
I will give the album 4 stars, but I wish I could give it 3.5. I rated Songs in the Key of Life 4 stars a couple of days ago and I don't think this should have as high of a rating.
It feels kinda wrong to be rating this album a 3, but I'm doing these ratings based on personal taste and I've never gotten into instrumental jazz. It is a beautiful sound though!
Favorite song: "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)"
I'm so glad I got this album today because I've meant to listen to it for a while, which gave me a reason to. I liked the music but didn't totally fall in love with it.
Love this album.
Not my favorite, but still enjoyed a few songs. My favorites were "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" and "My Body is a Cage".
I really really liked this album. I'd never heard of this band before nor Sandy Denny, but I'm glad I know them now. After watching A Complete Unknown I'm in the mood for this genre and I learned that a few of the songs on this album are actually Dylan covers.
My favorite songs are "Dear Landlord", "Percy's Song", and "The Ballad of Easy River".
I was familiar with Eric Bourdon from The Animals and "Spill the Wine", but haven't listened to much War. I enjoyed the album. I wish I could give it a 3.5.
Favorite songs: "Beetles In the Bog" (partly because I love the name), "The Cisco Kid"
I wasn't familiar with most of this album outside of "Mr.Brightside" and one or two others. I do love the synth-popyness of it. "Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll" was a fun one.
It's a bummer that Mr. Brightside has become a frat anthem. Probably not gonna be my thing, but I liked listening to it.
