Buena Vista Social ClubOne of the best albums ever made
One of the best albums ever made
There are obviously some classics on here but it's just not really my thing
It feels sacrilegious to vote this so low, given its cultural significance and how much I love later Pink Floyd, but I just don't really rate their earlier stuff - I find the psychedelic melodies a bit grating! Spirit of Woodstock, please forgive me etc
I'm sure this slapped in the 60s but I don't think this has aged well. That might have something to do with the fact I listened to the album in mono rather than stereo. But I also think the best Beach Boys songs (Good Vibrations, Surfing USA) are not on this album
A timeless classic. Hard to think of an album which deals with themes of poverty and war so effectively. A shimmering window into the psyche of 70s America on the street - almost makes you feel like you're at an anti Vietnam War protest. I'll never get tired of listening to it. (Shout-out to Mum for first playing it to me!)
During my indie phase (circa 2014-15) I was quite into Arcade Fire, especially The Suburbs, but I didn't enjoy this return to them after many years. I found it really musically disinteresting and didn't even make it through the whole album
I appreciate the significance of Gary Newman - you can tell how much influence this album had on 80s music and I like how much he was clearly influenced by Kraftwerk. As an album I thought it was musically enjoyable, a bit pleasant and inoffensive side, with some real standout tracks. Not my fav but I'd happily listen again
Trip hop, the 90s - this is my jam. There are some absolute classics on here. The only thing holding this back from 5 stars for me is that I think there are a few less interesting tracks on the album - but that doesn't detract from how impressive the standout tracks are, or how well it captures the mood around this incredible music scene
Didn't hate it but didn't love it. I guess that pretty much sums up most of U2's music?
I'd never heard of Hookworms before and I really enjoyed this! I'm not sure how much repeat-listen value this had for me, which is why I didn't rate it higher
I can't fault this album. 17 tracks of high-octane alt rock and there is barely a weak song on it. Plus all of the singles are nailed-on classics that I'll never get tired of
Faultless album, with maybe the best titular track ever written
Really liked this - a cool mix of folk instruments, jazz experimentation and rock song structure. I'd never heard of Traffic before and went on a fun rabbit hole listening to Steve Winwood's earlier solo stuff. I wished this album was longer!
Dreamy, blissed-out trip hop from Hull in the 90s. A genuinely beautiful album that I'll definitely be returning to!
Really beautiful, calming and stirring sitar. Having heard of Shankar through his relationship with the Beatles, it was nice to delve into his own music
A worthy successor to Sticky Fingers
I refuse to listen to this. If you're going to do grungey metal, do it properly - this doesn't. Plus, the first minute of the first song gave me a headache.
I love everything about this. Sonically it's perfect, there isn't a bad song on it, and it makes me imagine my parents, aunts and uncles dancing in 80s nightclubs
Who can argue with the combination of brilliant production, deft lyricism and Lauryn Hill. Endless repeatability, Ready Or Not one of my fav hip hop songs ever (and sample for one of the best D&B songs ever). It's gotta be 5
Mostly enjoyed this album, especially the parts which were clearly influenced by dub and trip-hop. Not a perfect project though - there are some weaker tracks which haven't stood the test of time as well
I don't even think Heroes is Bowie's best album but it's still so strong. The first half is packed with alternative pop appeal and gives has one of the best titular tracks for any album, and then the album gives way to three brilliant experimental tracks - the unnerving Sense of Doubt, dreamy Moss Garden and surreal Neukoln.
Talking Heads are so sonically distinct - their sound feels ahead of its time in many ways, but it also feels like it captures something really specific about the late 70s and early 80s. I'm more familiar with Speaking in Tongues so it was great to delve into this album, which is brilliant. Personally I prefer their later stuff but this was still an excellent listen
