Velvet dress, smokey bar, STRONG Martini that I am being so brave about and not wincing when I sip. Mans is waiting in the car until I'm done, I pull out another cigarette. He can wait.

Walking down the city street, boots on and hands in pockets. Not aimless, but with no direction. Thinking on the graffiti seen, glancing over overpasses and reading the inscription on benches past. Contemplation of people past and future, the feet that have or will have stepped where mine do now. Recognizing both connection and disconnection from them

I'm at a party because someone I wanted desperately to impress has invited me. I'm not comfortable in these clothes or with these people but I am trying because I'm supposed to. I think I hate it here and I think I hate them.

Driving and watching landscapes pass, dissolving into each other. The slow rise of mountains, the hazy distance of the road in desert, the lights of the gas station at night in the middle of the plains. Not doing well, but no one else is on the road, so that's okay.

Tea prepared by a new friend. The speaker is kitschy, plastic and already breaking. Dropped during a move, it's a memory that is shared and laughed over. In its spot on the windowsill it sits between two plants. The plants aren't named, but they've named themselves. Nothing deep, nothing consequential. Pleasant, kind, warm. I don't know if I'll remember this afternoon, but I'll carry it with me. Somewhere up there.

Letting things go is easier than grasping onto something new. Cramping hands and aching neck. Prove that you can do it anyways. The only way out is through. One foot in front of the other. Look nowhere but ahead, focused and driven with head held high. Prove it to them, observers observed or not. Maybe stronger together can be something attainable. Prove it to yourself.
