The Dreaming
Kate BushI couldn't really connect to this music. I can see how this album would be really important to folks though; it evokes a primal, almost repressed feeling--like someone wanting to escape from a structure of music that wasn't built for them, but they don't have the tools to do it. Railing against the patterns of chords and repetitive percussive elements, Kate Bush belts, hollers, and sometimes brays like a donkey to create a dissonance that rails against the structure of the music. I don't say that to be insulting in any way, it's just true and I respect the artistic decision to go there. If I were to listen to this album again, I would want to be deeply engaged in a creative process where I had to confront complicated, almost violent feelings. I would lean on Kate's vocals to carry me through my frustrations with the process and remind myself that the art is in fact found in the pain of that process. As a listener, it's difficult for me to parse the lyrics, so I would run this back another time and see if I can appreciate the poetry of her words. If anything, this album really sparked my curiosity and I'd love to discuss this work with a fan.
