I’m with Elizabeth on this one—I feel like it’s fine? Easy to listen to, but minimalist in the wrong kind of way for me or something. Strong coffee shop soundtrack vibes, so maybe if I’d listened to it while I was working and I would have felt differently.
This album was how I got into REM back in 5th grade, so it should have a powerful nostalgia aura for me. But “Orange Crush” aside, I was surprised by how little I liked this album listening to it now. It seems like I can hear them moving further away from the early stuff i still like, and some songs verge on the full cringe effect of “Shiny Happy People.” Automatic for the People sort of redeems this arc for me, but I honestly struggled to get all the way through this album. Extra points for memories of 5th grade though.
Full agreement with everything already said on this one
Very funny to go from yesterday’s album to Steely Dan, but it gave me a new appreciation for them.
Appreciated the reggae remix of Moondance, but mostly found this album to be pretty bland
Solid album, but I feel like if you’re going to have tracks about femme fatales framing their men, you shouldn’t also include tracks about little pious thoughts like what if god was a woman, and so on. Have some consistency, man!
I didn’t really get into this one when it came out, I think because I had turned 30, and was no longer fun or cool, but I appreciated it a lot more hearing it at this distance (because I’m cool again now, or because this album is no longer cool?)
Automatic 5 for “Angel From Montgomery” but would have earned it even without.
