While interesting that a cover album would be the first album revealed, it proved to be an album you cant help but like. Classic and timeless songs sung so dreamy it’s as if you were transported to another decade. The melodies are calming but also make you want to move with the song. And yes, he didn’t write these songs but it still feels like a story, choosing his favorite songs from his childhood. I enjoyed this album more than I expected.
Well I’ll give them this, the album definitely made me want to headbang. The music got the blood pumping but the lyrics were not my cup of tea and fairly basic. I also found his voice to be monotonous. In some songs, I found it boring but in others, I didn’t mind. Probably influenced more so by the music than the vocals. I actually think if I zoned out on the album and the lyrics didn’t catch my attention so much, I would have enjoyed it more.
I can’t put my finger on what exactly it is but something about this album made me want to turn it off just a bit more with each passing song. Maybe how slow it was and how each song sounded too similar to the last. And I obviously know sound quality was nowhere near what it is today but I could hear the sound of her opening and closing her mouth at points, particularly noticed in the last song. I wanted to enjoy this album as I know Billie Holiday is a legend but it just didn’t do it for me.
I’m indifferent to this album. My main takeaway is that it gave futuristic vibes, which I think was on track with their intended theme of the album.
Excited this one popped up. I love this album and Oasis in general. I’d consider it an essential album to the 90s pop rock genre. It’s interesting reading the history of the album, how much work went into it, and how it almost didn’t make it. Also curious to hear what the original tracks sounded like compared to the final album.
Loved this album. It had such a mix of sounds compared to their most known songs - specifically noticed some blues and country. Each song was diverse, lyrically and musically. I’m not sure I’d ever actually acknowledged the lyrics to Immigrant Song. And there was a bit of a disconnect for me between the lyrics and the music on Friends. All in all, I will listen to it again.
I can appreciate Missy for her talents in the industry and enjoy her hits as one-off songs (The Rain being the most recognized on the album) but the album as a whole isn’t something I would put on again. I did enjoy a few of the songs that pulled in bits of other songs. I liked how Pass the Blunt had reggae influence, even though the line about Puffy doesn’t age well. It’s not really my genre when it comes to albums but enjoyable for a one time listen.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. The overarching story of the first song stands the test of time. There will always be societies and cultures that struggle with the suppression of creativity and individualism. I found it to be an interesting song both musically and lyrically. While Bangkok was a fun, sillier song, songs like Tears and Something for Nothing were very moving. Great album.
Strong album with a lot of diversity and for me, the main message of the album is love and positivity. It had disco-esque songs that are fun to sing and dance to, then the slower songs giving the classic R&B. First two songs are obviously the most notable ones. All About Love was interesting, maybe my least favorite. Not sure I understood the last 30+ seconds of it. Didn’t seem to fit exactly. But overall, I’d listen to it again!
Oh this is one of my favs. So good on vinyl too. The album showcases raw emotion and songwriting, and knowing the drama of the band, impressive that they were able to compose the songs with such vulnerability to make it so great. So so so good. And not often do you get an album that is great from start to finish. Gold Dust Woman is one of the best on the album.
So many different genre influences in this album. It’s one of those albums that I think needs a few listen throughs, especially with the length of the album. I had surprisingly never heard of them but am definitely interested now!
Listening to the first few songs, I didn’t think this was going to be for me which was surprising because I’m a fan of David Bowie and rock operas. But then the album hit stride around “It Ain’t Easy” and it swept me away from there. It gives vibes of Rocky Horror with the dramatics and story. Most definitely will listen to this again.
