The Real Thing
Faith No More
The vocals grabbed me right away with a huge range and a lot of personality. The songs keep switching up their energy, with unexpected mood and tempo changes that made me want to keep listening. One track, “Surprise! You’re Dead!,” hit so hard I saved it instantly. The production feels layered and tight, with a lot more going on than just a rock band setup. Even though this style isn’t something I normally go for, there were plenty of moments that pulled me in and made it worth the listen.

Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath
The first thing that stood out was the vocals. They are strong, clear, and full of emotion, with a tone that cuts through the music. The guitar work is unreal, with solos that feel almost improvised, and the basslines are heavy and prominent. The instrumentation is simple on paper but fills the space in a way that feels impressive and powerful. I could hear a lot of blues and psychedelic influence woven into the early metal sound, which made it an easier listen than I expected for a metal album. Even though I didn’t connect with every song, the raw energy and musicianship kept me engaged and made it a solid listen.

Buena Vista Social Club
The music is beautiful and full of warmth, with clear guitar, rich percussion, and bongos that give it a steady rhythmic heartbeat. The brass sections stand out as gorgeous, and the whole album has a timeless quality that makes it feel older than it is. Even without a strong background in this style, it feels familiar while still being new to me. Over time, though, the songs started to blend together, making it better suited for a passive listen than something I’d sit with from start to finish. It’s easy, pleasant music that I enjoyed, even if it didn’t completely hold me all the way through.

Hunky Dory
David Bowie
This album was an incredible experience from start to finish. Every track had its own personality and left me wanting to see where the next one would go. The range is huge, moving from the light, upbeat feel of Fill Your Heart to the sharp, moody edge of Andy Warhol, and each style shift feels intentional rather than scattered. You can hear how well-crafted it is, with thoughtful arrangements and a clear sense of artistry behind the writing. The contrast between songs is striking, yet the album holds together as one cohesive piece. The production feels rooted in its early ’70s recording, but the ideas and delivery make it feel timeless. There’s a sense of playfulness and experimentation without losing accessibility, and it’s packed with moments that stick long after the album ends.

Fear Of Music
Talking Heads
This album is built on rhythm. It’s pop in its energy but never feels typical or safe, which makes it stand out. From the start I could hear how much this sound influenced modern bands, and it’s wild to recognize elements of things I listen to today. The music is unpredictable in a way that keeps you on your toes. Just when you think you’ve figured out the groove, it shifts, and while that makes it harder to dance or sing along to, it’s also what gives it its character.
For me, the first half of the album held together better. It felt more focused and cohesive, with a few songs that really stuck in my head. The back half started to lose me, drifting into ideas that sounded more like experiments stretched into songs. That looseness isn’t bad, but it didn’t always land for me. Overall, I’d call it “good weird.” There are some catchy moments and flashes of brilliance, but as a full album it left me feeling like something was missing.

Air
This album feels like jazz transported to another planet. It’s atmospheric and layered, with steady rhythms that build a whole world around you. The first track immediately hooked me with riffs that sounded improvised but were executed so cleanly they felt effortless. The bass throughout is addictive, carrying the songs while the synths and guitars stack in rich, beautiful detail. I kept hearing new layers emerge as it went on, and that gave it a sense of depth and surprise that never got old.
What stands out most is how immersive it feels. It’s cinematic, the kind of album you can throw on in the background and let it wash over you, but it also rewards focus if you want to sit with it. It’s smooth, polished, and full of personality. For an album that leans into electronica, it feels incredibly alive and human, with instruments and textures that sound organic even in their electronic form. From start to finish, it was a great listen.
