So many different instruments and influences show up in just these four tracks, telling stories of these different combinations of dancers. The harmonies are familiar but exaggerated and exciting--gritty sometimes. I hear both Spanish and African music throughout. Mingus' bass playing is the most outstanding I've ever heard. He is able to make his instrument sing in a way that often is uncharacteristic of bass lines. I can actually hum along with his lines—they don't get squashed in the mix... they cut right through. I suspect this is partly Charlie's facility, his instrument, and the incredible engineering of Bob Simpson.
