Daydream Nation
Sonic YouthBeing a teenager in the 90’s really was a glorious gift, that I didn’t realise was such a perfect gathering of alternative rock, heavy metal, rap, dance, hip hop. That would never be repeated in such explosive fashion. A firm member of the grunge scene, I absorbed the perimeters too, bands like Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth. I arrived with Sonic Youth at the much celebrated Dirty album in 1992. I adored its energy, abrasive rhythms, feedback and the radio friendly hits. Daydream Nation did not tick any of the necessary boxes for me. It’s a good album but lacks the sonic punch I’m after. It’s better than many albums around the time, it feels more like jazz at times, lost in swathes of noise rock, but nothing to hook me in. Production is more spacious but empty feeling. Approach with curiosity no expectations.
