Absolute fkn classic. When I hear this it feels like the entire 90s have been vacuum-sealed and stored safely in my diaphragm. The twangy, sun-bleached guitar makes me feel like an emo kid who lives on the warm humid coast and is torn between wanting to sulk about it and wanting to learn how to longboard. Anthony Kiedis’ voice… is it good? Unclear. Possibly not. Maybe we’ve all just agreed, collectively and silently, to love it anyway. His voice is iconic, and RHCP wouldn’t work without that nasally singing.
Gaye is wounded, horny, and sincere in this album. It’s the music you chuck on after a few wines at a dinner party and it triggers your mate who got divorced just before Christmas last year who is now absolutely plastered.
