Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Dec 23 2025

J: There is something special about an album that pulls you in even when the genre is one you don’t listen to often. The trumpets, the rhythm, her voice, it all works together to pull you in to each one of these songs. There is a log going on, but it never feels muddy. It’s very satisfying, infectious. She pulls off the vintage sound effortlessly. Her voice fits that style very well. This does not sound like it was released in 2006. This in combination of great hooks make the songs very sticky. V: I felt cool listening to this, the ambiance the album has is fantastic. I was expecting deeper lyrics but the melodies and background production made up for it. This would be amazing background music.

The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe
Dec 24 2025

J: It’s crazy how many genres and instruments she packs into this album. It’s very fun sounding. Mixed well, it never feels too crowded despite the many instruments and sounds. None of the songs had an immediate deep connection with me, but I like them enough to go back and re-listen every now and then. It is a very interesting exploration of what you can do when you decide to break away from the boundaries of genre. Will need a deeper listen to get more out of it, specially the lyrics. 3.5 V: I would listen again, especially like hour 12 on a road trip. I liked the upbeat songs the best, and I was amazed at the mixing and blending from song to song. Her voice surprised me as well, how it could change within the micro genres of the album.
