Anything I could possibly say about this album as a 27-year-old in 2025 feels frivolous. Listening to The Wall creates a visual montage of every band after 1979 that will be inspired by Pink Floyd. I prefer the theatrics of the A Side.

If I’m truthful, Marvin Gaye’s music has never been very interesting to me. It all kind of sounds the same, so I was excited to listen to this one because I’m determined to acquire a taste for it. I used to feel the same about Frank Ocean. I couldn’t really hear what made it unique until I listened to it a lot, and now he’s one of my favorite artists.
I think this album was a good introduction; it’s short and sweet. His lyrics are genuine, hopeful, and call for peace- the accompaniment reflects that. Whatever instruments I’m hearing (flutes, strings etc.) create a really magical sound at times. He also just has a really soothing voice. This album brought to mind a few artists that I think may have been influenced by Marvin Gaye including the aforementioned Frank Ocean and Michael Kiwanuka.
Fave tracks: What’s Going On, What’s Happening Brother, Right On, Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
I loved this! ’D’ was adventurous and kept my attention. I wonder if Improvement Movement was inspired by this album. At times I was reminded of indie rock essential artists like The Black Keys, Band of Horses, and Coldplay. I’m not super into jammy stuff, but I can appreciate artistry in almost every form, so no points taken off for that. I’m curious to hear how their music has progressed.
