1001 Albums Summary

i liked this a lot but i don't think i ever rly crossed over into "loving" it - every track is really good and otis redding's singing is incredible but it feels like its kind of the same thing for all 30 minutes.

very lovely and soothing but also i think i've been irreconcilably socialized to think of bossa nova as "nice coffee shop music" unless it's doing something really abrasive or out there.

okay yeah i can see why this is regarded as an all-timer. i was worried that it'd be like a seinfeld where the thousands of other acts copying off of it diluted its impact in retrospect but nah everything here's still world-class. i dont have much respect for metallica as people but i can recognize quality.

this is the funniest album art and title of all time and the music all being the most soulful 70s pop ballads i've ever heard only adds to that

first one of these that sounds like something i might have actually sought out and listened to myself beforehand - lov how it oscillates between soft-spoken and comedic and jarringly intense on a dime.

this was hovering at a 2/5 to begin with bc i think neil hannon sounds like jack skellington trying to be a lounge singer but then the quote from the father ted theme ran up and kicked me right in the dick

this is the kind of mid-2000s british* rock music that made me think i "didn't like" music as a teenager so i was expecting to hate it but it's uh. it's not bad actually? i think the lead singer's voice can be kind of grating but there's some damn good guitar playing here. especially like "california waiting". this is probably a 2.5 but on the more generous end of that *i just learned the band was american today

went in expecting some perfectly fine irish folk music, a genre i have great respect for but dont genuinely go out and listen to, turns out i probably should because this knocked me on my ass. genuinely really grand and stirring in a way i wasn't expecting it to be.

sounds very raucous and uninhibited, which is good to start with but it gets a bit muddy and unfocused as it goes on.

this was one of the very first albums i bought with my own money when i started deliberately listening to music that wasn't videogame osts so it was probably already getting a 5 just out of personal connection but also i still just love it as an album.

i like discordant terrifying noise so i was way into this, sorry rest of the website's userbase lmao

eh it's fine. adele's a really good singer & instrumentalist and the production's really good, everything feels really big and stadium-y, but also this is a top 40 pop album from after 2012 so despite the big emotional swings its still kind of bland and toothless and i dont think i'll remember any of this album in a week. i suspect i was having a much rougher go of things when i was 25 years old than adele was. the youtube playlist i found for this album ended with a short travelogue about a beach in the phillipines so that was a pretty fun bonus.

by what metric this was judged one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die.

honestly still think this is better than low end theory, maybe my fav tribe album overall but its a toss-up between this and midnight marauders.

really infectious energy, liked it a lot.

listening to this makes me wish i was there, which sounds like the dumbest most 10-year-old sounding way of saying i liked it, but actually i found that feeling almost working against the album because i could sense what a difference actually being in the room would have made and it just turned into sincere FOMO

really breezy and pleasant listen - if i'm being totally real it's a 3/5 because i probably wouldn't go out of way to listen to it again but getting a trans british person to like a fucking country album is so impressive im bumping it up to a 4

"even flow" is an all-time banger but i'm surprisingly unmoved by this overall. i think i just don't care for eddie vedder's gravelly singing voice.

so much more playful and eclectic than my previous exposure to britpop as a genre had primed me for. i think the doggies on the cover are cute also.
