Surprisingly dark industrial sounds on the bonus tracks

Such a great voice, especially when he's belting. Gets a little fiddly at times. There is a sense of humor amid the gloom, which I appreciate. A good time listening to this one.

Does the egomania completely deflate the idealism? The album ending where it does certainly makes it feel that way to me.

"What's Golden" looks like the biggest hit. It's very catchy, but kind of a departure from what I like about the previous tracks. I do very much like an album with an intro track. That feels very 90s to me. More distracting to me than what I usually listen to while I'm working.

This is a solid album. You wouldn't think the same chords over and over would work, but John Prine has a nearly unique ability in that regard. I like him best when it sounds like the song is coming through him, maybe from tradition, maybe from the country itself.
