strong opening, i forget all the time just how familiar ive become with neil young over the years. just as a voice out in the air he's hard to avoid. 'southern man' hits hard as the early stand out, though 'only love can break your heart' seems to get more play, i felt fairly unimpacted by it. similarly the titular 'after the gold rush' and its line "Look at Mother Nature on the run In the 1970s" perhaps felt a bit underwhelming as ive watched mother nature hang in the town square in 2020s. that being said, the usual weary hopefullness in neil's voice is just as comfortable as id remembered it as on my moms old mix cds. coming into the ending tracks of the album, im thinking 'don't let it bring you down will be my second off the album. though as 'cripple creek ferry' plays me out im finding it a fun and playful way out from the rest of tracks off the back half. on the 7 its around a 5, not quite a 6 but the nostalgia homleyness of neil young's voice at least makes this a pleasant record.
