Dummy by Portishead

glory box, the albums last track, is the most recognizable-- but that doesn't mean it's the best one (although it is good). i loved the mixing and sound production on this record. at times, the vocals take me out of what is so enjoyable. as such, my top tracks are wandering star (that outro is bonkers) followed by sour times.

first 80s record on my roulette... not a huge fan. everything sort of blends together in an angsty, political blur. fast paced songs about screwing ur landlord or packing a wife for home from a vacation in cambodia, not really my taste politically, historically, or genre-wise. wouldn't listen to it if it weren't for the challenge but if i had to pick a favorite track, it may be chemical warfare or kill the poor - because the track titles are the chorus, and the most memorable lyrics. or let's lynch the landlord!

4.5 stars if i could. so fun. id go in more depth about the progressions and vocal overlays but honestly just fun. saved it to my library.

Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens
Apr 08 2026

early (70s) singer songwriter with lots of emotion, expansive expressions with drum and bass breaks. it's got that piano that feels a bit elton john... a bit too moody for the day i listened to it first but it's got a whole lot of heart. 2.5 stars - probably wouldn't revisit. it's almost like glee... Sad Lisa i could see Kurt or Puck going crazy lmfao

Surfer Rosa by Pixies

the rest of this album is nothing like where is my mind, which i've been fond of since guitar hero 3: world tour (2008). kinda recognizing that this list has a strong 70s rock bias. wish id known that before i started. i don't mind a propensity for alt/rock sound, but i recognize the shortcomings and implications of this; excluding genres i want this platform to deepen my appreciation for international/funk/edm/etc. anyway- the album is not a revisit by a long shot. i liked the later half of the album more than the first, with the last track being my favorite of the album. i don't think they had it figured out yet in 88, but i still appreciate their other work.
