1001 Albums Summary

This album was massive at the time. I never saw the attraction then, and don't now. Mark Knopfler can't sing very well, and his guitar playing is apparently technically amazing, then end result is too middle of the road for me. I honestly can't understand why this was a big success. "The Man's Too Strong" on Side B is probably the best one, but all the singles are cheesy (even, if we're honest, by 1980s standards). The final track of the album - Brothers in Arms - is dirge.

Frequently all over the place, but awesome. One of a kind, most of the tracks still sounding amazing. Hard hitting themes, weird and lovely.

It’s a crooner! Long, mainly boring. Probably a milestone in Elvis’s career, but 2 good tracks (In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds) don’t lift the album as a whole above 2 stars.

I own this album, but it felt fairly unfamiliar to me on this latest relisten. It’s a passage through many styles - rock n roll, dub, reggae, and a bit of punk. The 2 lead singer thing works well and was probably innovative “back in the day”. I enjoyed my listen, but it didn’t reawaken a passion.

Almost unlistenable. Songs are devoid of hooks. You would have to be very wasted to enjoy this.

Still sounds fresh. Guitar hip-hop. Worth a read-listen, and plenty of good tracks beyond Devil’s Haircut.
