1001 Albums Summary

CCR is an exemplar of southern rock. Bad Moon Rising and Lodi are radio staples. This may partially explain why I’m a little bored with them, though other radio hit makers I still love. The styling of the lead singer is the main draw and, to a lesser extent, the songwriting. The production is good enough to be listenable, which is more than can be said for plenty of 60s and 70s rock albums. The musicians are solid, but there are no Jimi Hendrixes here. I liked hearing the bonus superstition song in Sinister Purpose and the double lead guitar moment in Tombstone Shadow. I also enjoyed the shift to a Motown cover on The Night Time is the Right Time. I don’t hate it. I wouldn’t need it in my collection to on though.

Sarah Vaughan is one of the classic blues and jazz voices. She doesn't seem to have all the improvisational bells and whistles of Ella Fitzgerald, but her tone and style are magnificent. This ablum is a live album giving the ambience of the place. I love 50s announcers who have pretty formal sounding vocal style even for a comparably low-brow performance . No "Wassup Chicago!" here. I also love the clinks and clanks and conversations in the background. Sarah Vaughn also seems completely at ease. She improvises and joyfully messes up and seems to be having an all around good time. This album also has a lot of jazz standards, at least to my ear. It's a good thing to listen to across from Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and the rest who were covering these tunes and improvising over them. This is my second time through this album and it's gotten even better.
