In Rainbows by Radiohead
May 14 2026

3rd pass notes: this is merely okay on a third pass. it’s still nice but not exceptional. 2nd pass notes: this album is a delight to listen to, to put on and listen to, and to soak up so much of the vibes I’m interested in from music. last track lingers a little. 1st pass notes, just listening to the music and not so much the words: 15 Step. easy listening rock, slight trippy vibes Bodysnatchers. meat and potatoes, something happening every beat (à la four on the floor) gives me that adrenaline rush to listen to that’s part fight or flight. reminds me of some christian rock I was listening to in the 00s. + Nude. like skipping stones on a glassy lake. reminds me of portishead. this band loves distortions that mellow the voice/sound. would listen to this track again. it’s a little bit stewing in heavenly wash vibes (derog) Weird Fishes / Arpeggi. curtains of rain, but energetic and not sad. might be warm melancholy though. 00s muted caterwauling indie vibes (also Xian rock feeling, though it’s more of the era perhaps). similar to some GitS:SAC ost. All I Need. now this is the jam right here. slow, with distorted bass and supplemental effects.sounds like the city at night, one of my favorite genres ++ Faust Arp. this is a cool concept (doubled over unison singing but slightly off because of different takes) but also seems like it might trying too hard? it’s demanding I listen to the words so that’ll be a later pass. this style/album/group must have been an influence on GitSSAC for real (although the timeline doesn’t line up) Reckoner. nice warm bath. easy to tune out of. also probably wants words attention. falsetto. I like the strings though. House of Cards. I like this opening. the sound wash is neat. is this sound phasing/halting shoegaze? good for getting lost in and tranced out to. Jigsaw Falling Into Place. I like the register of the vocalist a lot better here. seems a bit like a Rock Band song (neutral). missed the beginning of the track because I was zoned out. Videotape. plaintive, reflective. I do like it. has a soft minimal-sounding accompaniment that’s really neat. again seems GitSSAC esque ++

Didn’t finish a detailed listen of this one but I really liked what I heard. 1st listening notes One Nation Under a Groove. laid back funk groove. I like that it has sections with the beat and back up singers and just laying back. awesome. Groovallegiance. nice bass in this one. neat background effects on guitar. Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers). Into You. Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!).

Listening to this album makes me turn it over in my head a lot. I can hear the lyrics crisply, which is a distinct experience from most albums. I can hear several strains of familiar types of music in this album. I find traces of CCM in most of the tracks here, and my knee jerk reaction to label and dismiss this style is worth interrogating. Because this album challenges and engages me and also because it has familiar elements that are familiar to me from listening to popular music albums (as opposed to jazz and funk elements that are familiar to me from other genres) I am rating this album positively. It is Important to me in that way, yet by the end of the project I hope it’s no longer so conspicuous a bridge into the realm of popular music for me.

A very pleasant album to listen to.

Morrison Hotel by The Doors

Seems a pretty good split between blues you can imagine anyone carrying off well and playing with a fun mix and palette of sounds.

I love listening to this album. It has high production value and it was so much fun to journey through its waves. Would listen to it more outside of this exercise.
