1001 Albums Summary

Too one dimensional for me. I’ve mentioned this about DS before and it rings true in this album: I appreciate and respect the virtuoso guitar playing, but the music just doesn’t do anything for me.

Nostalgia inducing, for me anyway. Really fun and innovative album. Bridged a gap between indie pop and electronic music which were both very popular at the time. I do not know if this album could have been released at any other time and be as successful. Also, one of my all-time favorite songs in "Electric Feel."

1. Ramble Tamble - 9/10 - Love the blend of classic CCR Southern-jangle and ethereal psychedelic break. Like listening to ZZ Top meets Pink Floyd. 2. Before You Accuse Me - 7/10 - Classic CCR style. Fast and fortified Fogerty. 3. Travelin' Band - 6/10 - A little too jangly for me but fun. 4. Ooby Dooby - 4/10 - Respect the effort on the cover but not for me. 5. Lookin' Out the Back Door - 8/10 - This is CCR that people know and love. 6. Run Through the Jungle - 10/10 - Might be my favorite track on the album. Sweaty, dark and deep bayou with ominous tinges. Moody and broody. 7. Up Around the Bend - 10/10 - One of their most recognizable songs and an absolute banger. Fogerty's vocals on point. Builds, crescendos and delivers. 8. My Baby Left Me - 8/10 - Classic juke-joint blues rock. Evokes Muddy Waters. Fogerty's vocals a bit smoother than his usual rasp on this one. 9. Who'll Stop The Rain - 10/10 - Another familiar classic. More melody and harmony. Perfect for a nice long drive down a desolate highway. 10. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - 10/10 - Phenomenal classic. Pays clear homage to the original but still adds their own distinctive sound while taking away nothing from the original. A perfect cover song in my opinion. Soiunds like it could have been their own track but you clearly know its roots. Great guitar solo as well. 11. Long As I Can See the Light - 9/10 - the previous track is a tough act to follow and I was prepared to hate this track in the first few notes, but it really settled into its own and grew on me. In retrospect, its a very apt ending to a great album. Its a "cooldown" after a great workout that leaves you feeling fit and ready to take on the day.

1. I Looked Away - 8/10 - good leading track. Great guitar weaving in and out and good classic Clapton vocals. Really sets the mood for the rest of the album. 2. Bell-Bottom Blues - 9.5/10 - really really good song. A perfect blend of Southern and British rock, IMO. Melodic when it needs to be. Pained vocals. Twangy yet jangly guitars. 3. Keep On Growing - 5/10 - decent enough guitar battle is its only saving grace otherwise its like a 2. Really a whatever song that I otherwise would not listen to again. 4. Nobody Knows You... - 4/10 - is this a cover? Feels like a cover. And a boring one nonetheless. I do like the guitar solo. 5. I Am Yours - 3/10 - sounds like something I may have heard from a beachside bar sung by an aging musician asking for Venmo donations. 6. Anyday - 5/10 - HOT TAKE: I liked the vocals more than the music in this one. Kept trying to imagine extrapolating the vocals and putting them behind some 90's grunge guitars and distortion - wouldve sounded much better. 7. Key To The Highway - 3/10 - generic ass blues. Did nothing for me. 8. Tell the Truth - 4/10 - more of the same as above. Entire album is really beginning to feel like one note. 9. Why Does Love... - 8/10 - this is rock. Loved the verses. LOVED the guitars. Hated the boring and tired chorus. 10. Have You Ever Loved A Woman - 7/10 - more of the same 10/10 guitar with 1/10 everything else. 11. Little Wing - 6/10 - its ok. Does not hold a candle to the original. 12. Its Too Late - 4/10 - i'm tired chief. 13. Layla - 11/10 - its my favorite song of all time. Looking back, I never listened to this entire album and the song itself seems like an anomaly in it. But it does not change anything about the song for me. Its perfection. 14. Thorn Tree - 2/10 - glad thats over OVERALL - 3. Could easily be a 2 but getting a 1 star bump for Layla.

Its a cool album for what it is - classical Indian music. Now, as neither a fan of traditional classical music nor an Indian, its a bit out of my element. However, I would vibe the fuck out with this if I was stoned.

I totally do get the criticism of this album being one-dimensional Dylan-esque, although to me it always felt more like ethereal Springsteen, but I also cannot help but enjoy it. To a degree, I feel that complete albums should have a similar tone or feel to encompass what the artist is trying to convey. "Red Eyes" was a favorite of mine well before this album popped up on this project so I was already versed in War On Drugs. I respect the artistry and I dig the sound. While, I dont think its an all-time great album, I thoroughly enjoy it. Solid 4.

Dolly is great but this kind of music is just not for me.

1) 2/10 - idk what this jangly non-descript music is. I dont think I like it. 2) 5/10 - cute guitar riff. Whatever song otherwise. 3) 6/10 - some decent elements to this song. Better than the last two. Still mostly meh. 4) 1/10 - basic country guitar intermission 5) 1/10 - I cant even quantify this as a song 6) 3/10 - more meh 7) 1/10 - why? 8) 1/10 - idk what this band wants to be. This is like a Beatles b-track ... I'm over this. not for me at all. Its not country. Its not punk. Its not rock. Its a weird bastardization of them all and its ugly.
