Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jun 23 2026

Cruise ship band music. This is the type of music drunk dads in their 40-60s think is good simply because it's easy to digest, easy to sing along to, easy to understand, easy to forget. The instruments are nice enough; clearly they're talented and follow the right formula to create popular music. The vocals, I'm not too excited about though. And perhaps that's just a me-problem because I've been around too many socially ambitious office workers that speak the way this dude sings. I feel the same way about the songs as I do about the show Friends--I understand the popularity but don't feel enough depth in the water to dive into the pool.

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

This doesn't feel like music I'd casually listen to. This feels like something I would dig up from memory if I was making a silly little movie and needed background music for a silly little scene. As a semi-serious person... I can dig it.

Juju by Siouxsie And The Banshees

It was a pleasure having such a classic on this list. Maybe I’m just biased being already familiar with the entire album, but I still couldn’t help but dance along to every single song. Siouxsie Sioux reminds us why she’s the mother of goth music with her iconic spooky vocals, graveyard beats, and ghastly synths. Although not the type of album one would describe as “emotional”, it inspires a deliciously gloomy mood. To me, that’s the baseline of all effective goth music.
