1001 Albums Summary

Steely Dan – Can’t Buy a Thrill was a really enjoyable listen. It has a relaxed vibe without ever feeling boring, and it’s impressive how well it still holds up in 2026. I wasn’t around in the early ‘70s, but this is exactly how I imagine that laid-back West Coast / hippie era sounded. Definitely an album I’ll come back to.

I expected something much more energetic from a band called Massive Attack—almost like the Beastie Boys. Instead, I got a very laid-back, atmospheric album. I can appreciate its influence, but as someone who’s never been much into rap or trip hop, I found it a bit too slow to really grab me.

Clint Eastwood is an absolute banger, and I really enjoyed 19-2000 as well. Unfortunately, the rest of the album never quite reaches the same level for me. It’s an interesting mix of styles and I can see why it was influential, but overall it felt a bit inconsistent

Moby – Play still holds up really well. Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? and Natural Blues are timeless classics, but unlike some other albums, this one stays consistently strong from start to finish. It has a coherent atmosphere that makes it easy to listen to as a complete album. I could have used a bit more energy today in this heat, but overall it’s still a great record.

The Black Keys – Brothers is a solid album with a warm, bluesy sound and some really good songs. It feels very cohesive, but overall it’s a bit too laid-back for my current taste. I can appreciate the musicianship, yet I was missing a bit more drive and energy throughout the album.

Fleet Foxes just wasn’t for me. I can appreciate the beautiful harmonies and understand why so many people love this album, but it never really grabbed my attention. It’s well made, just far too folk-oriented and laid-back for my taste. I kept waiting for it to build momentum, but it never quite got there.

Madonna – Like a Prayer is a surprisingly rich and ambitious pop album. I expected some iconic singles, but I was impressed by how much is going on throughout the record — gospel influences, funk, rock guitars, big choruses and very personal songwriting. Not every track hit me equally, but as an album it feels bold, varied and much deeper than I expected.
