1001 Albums Summary

First Listen: Rocks Off - Love the trumpets. Started off alright, got more into it the further along it got. Heavy topic for an opening, wondering if the album will keep exploring themes like this. Solid start for the album, 7.9/10 Rip This Joint - A fun song, not what I'm used to from The Rolling Stones. 7.4/10 Shake Your Hips - Idk why but the guitar makes me think quite a bit of La Grange by ZZ Top, which released just a year later. Definitely getting a blues rock feeling that wasn't really there in the previous two songs. Don't care for the lyrics but oh well. I know it was normal for songs to just keep going for a while as they end, but I just didn't care for it here. 6.8/10 Casino Boogie - Fully into blues now, but I can still feel the more typical rock elements. While the lyrics aren't meant to mean much, it almost feels like it's about America's capitalist approach to war and such. 7.4/10 Tumbling Dice - Surprisingly was the only big hit, but I can see why it was one. Catchy, but nothing that sticks out as great to me. 7.3/10 Sweet Virginia - We've transitioned from rock into blues and now we have country in the mix. Harmonica caught me by surprise. This slow blues/country rock genre has never been my thing, but I like the sax. 7.5/10 Torn and Frayed - Surprisingly, I really like this one, despite it seemingly being a less popular one. Nice to listen to. 7.8/10 Sweet Black Angel - Interesting turn to folk, but strongly political, almost directly calling to free and show support for Marxist and feminist civil rights activist Angela Davis who was on trial for ties to a shooting. Like the marimba. Also Mick Jagger says the n word???? 7.7/10 Loving Cup - I really like this one. 8.5/10 Happy - Another song going more in the direction of what I like. Hard instrumentals. Realizing how often they just repeat the same line at the end of songs 8.0/10 Turd On The Run - Definitely going for a fun one here. I can feel some more of the country influences. 7.7/10 Ventilator Blues - Guitar starts of country/blues as hell. That intial feeling sticks through the whole song. Felt like there was some spiritual meaning in the lyrics. 7.6/10 I Just Want To See His Face - Begins with a faint fade from the last song. Starts with a long, subtle gospel intro. Weird reverb. The vocals sound like they were recorded out of a studio, but it kinda works. Interesting lyrics about religion and talking abiut Jesus vs wanting to see Him directly. 7.4/10 Let It Loose - Starts off with a completely new type of sound. I like this sound, depressing and unfortunate lyrics 7.7/10 All Down the Line - A straight up electric rock song. I like it. 8.0/10 Stop Breaking Down - it's hitting but at the same time not. Another one I don't care for lyrically. 7.6/10 Shine A Light - When the piano hits, IT HITS. Same with the guitar. And then the lyrics. Damn. HOLY FUCK THAT INSTRUMENTAL BREAK. 9.3/10 Soul Survivor - Another one that hits. Thematically I think it works well as a closing song. Chorus just drags a bit. 8.3/10

Custard Pie - Good old Led Zeppelin. 8.2/10 The Rover - Very nice guitar intro. Not a big fan of the melody. Weird, almost scat-like repetition of one line. 7.8/10 In My Time of Dying - Love the intro. Actually, I love everything about this. The guitar, the inspiration, don't care that it's insanely long. 9.2/10 Houses of the Holy - Another just straight up fire song 8.5/10 Trampled Under Foot - Kinda funky. I like it. Really liking the Stevie Wonder inspiration 9.0/10 Kashmir - Already going in aware of this being a banger, but damn, I love the brass in this. Vocals are great. Maybe it drags a bit but I don't care. 9.2/10 In the Light - Ethereal experience in that intro. Damn. Apparently it's from bowing an accoustic guitar. Ooh and those vocals. The main portion isn't *as* cool but still good. The instrumental break feels hopeful, matched with the lyrics. Wonderful song. 8.8/10 Bron-Yr-Aur - A nice accoustic instrumental. Glad this one's not another 8 minute long song 8.3/10 Down by the Seaside - beginning lives up to the name. Unique but least interesting so far. 7.6/10 Ten Years Gone - While I love their style of music, this one just feels like "another Led Zeppelin song." 8.1/10 Night Flight - I like the grooves here. Kinda wish this one wasn't so short. Flows nicely to the next song. 8.7/10 The Wanton Song - Jamming out. Love the rhythm here, the instrumental bridge is great. Then the breakdown at the end goes hard. Tired of these types of lyrics but whatever. 8.5/10 Boogie with Stu - Immediately has me like woah what the hell. And they got a mandolin in this boogie ass song? Fuck it, we ball. Lyrics are a nothingburger though. 7.8/10 Black Country Woman - Suddenly very country. This one is very odd. Apparently this one was genuinely just to take up space. Also it was recorded in Mick Jagger's garden. A very country song indeed. Feels like someone had a country song ready and told Robert Plant to sing it. 7.5/10 Sick Again - Feeling some blues here. Interesting how a lot of this second half feels a lot more like standard structured songs. I like it though. 8.3/10
