1001 Albums Summary

Not my cup of tea as I have more indie leanings and all too familiar in the main. Several ubiquitous songs. I liked the Joy Division tendencies of ‘Bullet the Blue Sky’ though. I understand JD were a big influence.

A bit rowdy for my mood today…

Ubiquitous.

I like a few of his earlier’new wave’ singles (especially ‘Watching the Detectives’, ‘Accidents Will Happen’ and ‘Oliver’s Army’ but not fussed about this album particularly.

When I got past the cheesiness of the ubiquitous ‘Marrakesh Express’ I’ve really enjoyed it. A perfect piece of anti Vietnam War Americana…particularly pleasing knowing that Nash was from….Blackpool!

I honestly thought this would be crass, moronic, LA poodle rock garbage…….and it is.

Have always loved the title track. Supremely honest and ambiguous portrayal of the homeless. A mixture of sympathy and guilty, recoiling disgust which is reflected in the contrasting musical shifts. Cover art is wonderful too. B side picks up again after a lull earlier in side A.

A decent album. Obviously seminal at the time and a few high points even now. Title track the standout.

Knew this from listening to Peel religiously back in the day. I liked the idea and the fact that they existed…..it helped that the songs were so short!

I saw Flaming Lips play this album live in its entirety at Brixton Academy last year. Always wonderful live. My favourite album of theirs is the later ‘American Head’.
