Liked this enough to listen through twice at work. Enjoyed the variety of polished and rough/partial/imperfect. Appreciate his post-Beatles work more now than before.
Not my favorite Monk album. Too angular, maybe? Plodding at times? Not sure exactly why. Jack, I looked at my albums, and I have zero jazz albums from Mom. Seems I only took a few in the rock genre: Beatles, Stones, Yes, Tull… But I have listened to a fair amount of Monk through the years, especially when I was working on my grad school thesis project framed around the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies. And for whatever reason, this one’s not among my favorites. Sorry, 3 stars. PS, about J Timberlake (I didn’t realize at the time that your review notes had to go in first): I never knew how derivative of Stevie Wonder he was. Still didn’t like the album much, but - huh. Also: auto tune, blech.
Spare and soulful. I can dig it.
Very mixed bag for me. I have the hereditary vinyl not so much because I love it all, but the flute player obligation. And I do like the more melodic pieces, and Locomotive Breath for the solo, but the heavier tracks (first two especially) make me feel slightly ill.
Still don’t like this much - harsh and annoying, which is the point to a degree. It is more interesting now as a quasi-historical document; I was most engaged when I was reading the lyrics on Spotify along with the music.
