turns out i actually hadn't heard 100% of this one even though i thought i had. this album is weirder than i thought it was

true story: i'd never heard Movin' Out but i *have* listened to a shitload of the mouth quadrilogy, so i did a double take. turns out that song mashes up well with a lot of things. The Stranger sounds a little familiar too Scenes from an Italian Restaurant would be great if i was drunk at karaoke i bet. there's nothing really wrong with this album it's just not really my thing with the exception of a few songs obviously everybody loves Only the Good Die Young ah fuck She's Always a Woman kind of getting me though idle thought now that i'm most of the way through: is it possible that 80% of all musicians have stolen a melody from billy joel full disclosure gamers i was going to give this one a 3 but i think i've been swayed into a 4

wasn't expecting all of the tracks i haven't heard a billion times (ie everything except the title track and suffragette city) to be bangers

hrgh okay i don't.... actually like this album very much. i know that's sacrilege i've just never really been a flaming lips fan. but i'll give it another listen the lyrics are just. a bit too cute. i don't know how to describe it it insists upon itself Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell is decent. i liked this song in the past and i don't mind it now Are You A Hypnotist?? is also okay i used to really love Do You Realize? and i think i listened to it too many times i don't know i have a weird hater energy for this album and the flaming lips generally that i don't understand. i try to pick out reasons i don't like it, and they're things that other artists do that i'm fine with. this band and this album are generally well-liked by people who like other music that i'm very into. i scanned through their discography quickly trying to figure out what other flaming lips i've listened to, and i think i still like a decent chunk of Transmissions from the Satellite Heart better than this album, but i can't really articulate how it's different. which vexes me; i want to be able to identify why i don't like something. but sorry Yoshimi i'm still not feeling it in 2026

huh! okay i know very little going into this one. i know Rock Lobster/Love Shack and i love Roam and that's the sum total of my knowledge of the b-52s. okay no upon looking at the track list i also know Planet Claire because people would meme on it on the internet but i don't know if i can recall the melody aha yes i do remember planet claire. 52 Girls is a lot of fun *really* like Dance This Mess Around i can't offer any kind of objective analysis of Rock Lobster. it's Rock Lobster. i cannot say if it's bad or good. but i am enjoying it more than i have been enjoying some of the songs i've already heard to death last few tracks are a bit weaker i think at the risk of sounding like i am completely up my own ass, this album feels simultaneously very of its era and also incredibly ahead of its time. like the sort of 'surf rock' sound is very 60s/70s, but there are a lot of other aspects that feel like they became the blueprint for a lot of alternative/experimental music. the vocal style is really fun i feel like i'm already repeating myself and i'm probably going to end up saying this a lot: i'm only really familiar with the extremely popular/'meme' songs, so i'm surprised by how much i like all the stuff i've never heard of in my life. solid

this one i'm pretty blind on. i know (and love) Jolene because everybody knows Jolene, and i've heard the memes about 9 to 5, and think she's a cool person, and that's it. my hunch is that i'm not going to be all that into this, but i'm interested to see i really like the title track She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) is speaking to me a bit the rest of this i can kind of take or leave; it's the kind of thing where i think this is objectively good and can appreciate it, but it's not really my thing and i wouldn't go out of my way to listen. she has a really lovely voice. i think i'm just not really a country fan. i'm choosing to do these numerical ratings non-objectively holy shit she just passed away. weird timing. RIP

granted i've only skimmed the list, but i think this is one of the only ones where i've never heard of this band or this album in my life lmao did.... did they rip off Pearly Queen for Walk the Dinosaur? well. i mean i like this track because i like Walk the Dinosaur Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush and Am I What Was Or Am I What I Am are kinda cool, there's some prog stuff going on here big jethro tull energy with the flutes on Withering Tree okay Shanghai Noodle Factory is neat. this goes some places i'm gonna be honest this is kinda just going in one ear and out the other. i don't dislike it, but i kinda feel like i've heard 'better' versions of what this is. which is silly because that's not how art works, i realize. i need to hear someone who knows shit about anything talk about this album because i feel like there's stuff i'm not picking up on or something. it's not bad by any means but i feel like i want to read what the book has to say about it. this might be something i'd appreciate better upon multiple listens (lol after the album was over it autoplayed into Rainmaker and i dig this a lot honestly. maybe i should listen to some of their other albums)

have heard very little talking heads! exciting I Zimbra is fun as hell. did not expect the lyrics would be nonsense i think i've heard of Life Under Wartime and i really like the bassline and... horns? on this really love Memories Can't Wait and its sort of weird droning, driving vibe. might be my favorite in a weird way i cannot explain what i mean by this: i want to dislike Heaven, but i can't i keep wanting to describe a bunch of these tracks as 'fun' but like. they are. there's just a kind of playful, experimental energy to this that's really fun to listen to; a lot of funky beats, lots of 'swerves', david byrne's vocal style. i don't even really think 'experimental' is the right word because that suggests music much less 'catchy' than this, but i'm not really sure how else to describe what i'm getting at. the wikipedia article says they wanted to use disco rhythms and yeah, i absolutely hear that. i think it stumbles a little on the last few tracks but i thoroughly enjoyed it i feel silly for never having listened to this and only knowing talking heads as 'oh yeah the Psycho Killer guys'. i'm sorry mr. byrne i was not familiar with your game

it heard me say 'i've never heard of this band or this album in my life' on the last one lmao. let's go. oh shit oh fuck i missed a day, scratch that, i will come back to this i immediately like this. dude they are going OFF Flight of the Foo Birds is a delight, i think that's a clarinet i'm hearing? although it could be a saxophone. here's the thing i'm reading about basie on wikipedia and this dude had so many guys in his band that there might very well be both here. damn i guess that's why they call it big band there's this very, like.... intricate? piano work on both Double-O and The Kid From Red Bank that's super cool, like it's being played kind of softly but very fast. i don't know that i've heard much like it. and also god damn Double-O just rules in general i've long wished that i knew more *about* music, like how it's constructed and produced and shit, and this project is really intensifying that, because often i notice stuff but i have no idea how to articulate it. i'm pretty sure the bass on Whirly-Bird is what people mean by 'walking bassline', but i'm not sure. in any case, i love it. standout track i think Lil' Darlin' is moody and very pretty and making me feel things i like this kind of music a lot but don't know much about it or listen to a ton of it. embarassingly- although i imagine i'm not the only person this happened for- i played fallout and bioshock as a teen and said 'hey, wait, this music genuinely rules, actually'. which is not to say that they were using big band/swing 'ironically' or something, but i ended up listening to a lot of those tracks outside games, lol. one of my must-have mods for all of the 3d fallouts was anything that added more period-typical music to the radio. i've been listening to some jazz recently but it's more 60s-era and later and generally quartets at the very largest, so this is a fun expansion to that anyway i don't know that i ever would have listened to this album otherwise and i enjoyed the hell out of it. i don't really know how to rank it because i feel like i don't know enough about music to be able to talk about or analyze it coherently. i'm just giving it a 5 because i had a great time (side note: oh wow i went to look for some of the jazz standards he's evidently known for, just to see if they rang a bell, and he's on The version of Fly Me To the Moon everybody's heard. like the album with all the most popular Sinatra songs, it's a combo album with Basie. holy shit lmao. i live under a rock. anyway Blue and Sentimental is fucking gorgeous)

lmfao okay. uhhh i'm a pretty big boards of canada fan. i have a boards of canada t-shirt. so this is interesting. i saw this was the only boards album on the list and my gut check was 'not the one i would've picked', but we'll see if i revise that, especially because this is not an album that i listened to start-to-finish much. i also tend to be really bad with song titles when music is instrumental. there are some tracks that i think are on here that do probably make it the 'archetypical' boards album, to be fair. but i think i prefer Geogaddi (and i love Tomorrow's Harvest but for whatever reason i have listened to that one as an album and think of it is a contiguous piece/concept album more in comparison to the others). i forgot that Wildlife Analysis is basically an intro track. maybe this *is* a contiguous piece more than i give it credit for i hit the vocal sampling on An Eagle In Your Mind and Boards does a specific kind of vocal sampling that is one of the things i love about it. it's often really distorted and hard to make out; sometimes (as in this case) it's less coherent speech and more speech remixed into an instrument. and when it's full speech it's generally contextless and evocative in an interesting way. i tend to really not like voice samples in music when they're too 'on the nose', for lack of a better term. eg i wasn't wild about the sampling on Inferno. i should give that album another chance but it didn't really blow my socks off. which is a shame because i spent like 8 years half-jokingly saying 'someday we'll get another Boards of Canada album' yeah okay this album has The Colour Of The Fire (and later Sixtyten); i can see how this is the one album you'd pick to represent this band's deal lol Telephasic Workshop is a personal favorite. the beat on it is weird and fun. it's even got the 'bordering canada' sample got to Triangles and Rhombuses and oh yeah this album has, like... 'interludes'. i feel like that sort of reinforces their work's vibe as being heavily inspired by/sampling old public access television but i can't really finish that thought oh wait Sixtyten is not the track i thought it was wtf. what the fuck track do they actually count and say 'sixty-ten' in, then?? fatass beat on this one though Roygbiv is another favorite and also probably another archetypical Boards track- vintage-y public access-y edutainment-y synths, weird vocal sampling, fat beat. i keep getting distracted because i've just put on the whole boards discography as background listening so many fucking times lmao Rue The Whirl has the awesome sampled, like... i keep wanting to describe it as an 'audio spiral', maybe because of the title, but i guess it's just a scale. some of this almost sounds backmasked? also it's occurring to me that i feel like a bunch of these tracks have the same or very similar beats, which i didn't notice before Aquarius is what i *thought* Sixtyten was. i can be forgiven; she literally says 'sixty-ten' in this one. if you had to give someone one track to explain what Boards of Canada is, it would probably be Aquarius. i've always assumed this is sampling sesame street but i guess i don't actually know. upon looking into it, this is apparently correct, thanks to an obsessive wiki that i'm going to have to dig through. there is some insane numerology shit in here. i know the band themselves gets into some of that but some of the stuff on this wiki feels like a fuckin stretch yeah okay Pete Stands Alone is another all-timer. i feel like this is the most Tomorrow's Harvest-ass track. i think the melody is similar to some stuff over there One Very Important Thought is where you decide if you like boards of canada or not. also it's weird to me that this isn't the final track. it feels like they're kind of doing a finale there with that after Open The Light but then we threw Happy Cycling in here the question is whether i just kneejerk give this a 5 or not. i think i do, because these ratings are non-objective, and i like this band in general and this album, and upon a relisten there's more classic good material here than i thought. sitting down and actively listening, i do think some of the tracks feel same-y in a way that tempts me to give it a 4, though i'm not sure how that compares to the other albums. i think this is a band where you *could* argue that a bunch of their songs are just the same song. however, i really like that song. so, well, you know. there's just something i think of as 'the Boards of Canada sound' that i really love and that a lot of people have imitated but i've rarely heard anyone else do it in a way i liked quite as much. sorry about me

i know of Hole and like a couple songs. Malibu is really good and oh hey it's on this album. dunno how i'll feel about the rest of it realizing how many times i've played Celebrity Skin in rock band lmao. pretty good track something about the vocals on the verses on Awful rubs me the wrong way a bit i do fucking love Malibu. i don't know why i like Reasons To Be Beautiful a lot. i think i prefer it when she's like... letting her voice be kinda rough? i'm not sure. i feel like sometimes she's trying too hard to sing 'normally' and it sounds really weird lmao. i like her voice a lot when it sounds lower/throatier/rawer Use Once & Destroy is almost phenomenal. i do really like it regardless fuck. again, Northern Star is like... ALMOST there do not like Boys On The Radio. or Heaven Tonight, frankly Playing Your Song is again, frustratingly, almost really good and i don't like Petals. though the outro is cool i like this, but i feel like there are the bones of an album i love here, and it's just not quite getting there. i'll start to hear something interesting but it doesn't commit, or i'll be feeling it and it'll make a choice i'm not thrilled about. and there are a couple tracks on the back half of the album that i'm not into. i can't decide whether to give this a 2 or a 3. i do really like a couple songs and i almost really like several more. it's just frustrating that i feel like it's almost there. i think i'm going with 3

oho. interesting that i'm getting this so soon after the count basie album. i genuinely have no idea how i'm going to feel about this the melodies he sings are.... unpredictable in a way i like? i don't know how to describe it. like he's sort of circling around the song melody in interesting ways i mean yeah he has one of the voices of all time. i liked You Make Me Feel So Young a lot. so far the rest of this has been nice but not standing out to me too much. funnily i really like the instrumentals on Old Devil Moon but not the vocals/lyrics as much i'm realizing i like my swing/jazz at least a little melancholy. if the song is too happy i'm usually less into it. this might be my fault for being a gloomy motherfucker and coming to this kind of music via post-apocalyptic media, lmao i said that and had high hopes for We'll Be Together Again but it didn't really click in the way i was hoping :( lmao i don't know if Makin' Whoopee has aged well. it is hard to take seriously. but it's fun, i'm enjoying it, and it's making me laugh yessssss Anything Goes. classic. i think i've only ever heard other peoples' versions of this? i think this is a good example of the sort of... playful singing style i'm enjoying here How About You is really good too i don't know! i liked this, and there are some tracks i really enjoy, but a lot of it didn't make a huge impression on me. there are also other sinatra songs that i prefer to stuff on here (had to take a detour after the album finished to go listen to Strangers In The Night, and am really liking a lot of the other stuff on that album way more). to a certain degree i think there's an aspect here where i have a hard time having a strong opinion, because it's *so* classic and foundational that it's hard for me to evaluate on its own, outside the context of the massive amount of stuff it led to and inspired. take the 3 i'm giving this as 'i generally like this and think it is objectively good but it left me a little cold'

i'm excited about this one because Moby feels like an artist that i know a lot 'around' but haven't actually heard much of. a lot of pop cultural shittalking and i think i liked a few of his songs (or possibly remixes?) but i can only really think of one track off the top of my head. i adore Shot In The Back Of The Head. and also there was a Moby track at a pivotal point in The X-Files that i have VERY mixed feelings about. (the X-Files, not the track. the song was used well and frankly doing some heavy lifting for that scene, lmao) evidently the original release is 18 tracks long so i'm limiting this to those original tracks. the only spotify version is an extended cut that is over twice as long. yes i know spotify is terrible it's on my todo list Honey's very cool. this feels 'structurally' similar to a lot of music i like with the sampling i like Porcelain; it feels SO 90s to me for some reason. the string samples and the piano, i think. i'm enjoying this but i think i prefer music like this to... i want to say 'fuck a little harder' but that's not academically precise. it's very nice in a chill way, though i almost like South Side a lot but something about the vocals is odd. although maybe it's odd in a way i like? hm. can't decide Bodyrock is good but a touch too.... clean? it's missing something. man idk am i just not in the right headspace to do these or something Natural Blues i think i've heard before and liked. i associate this piano tone with a specific kind of... house? happy hardcore? that i don't like or at least feel like i outgrew. but it doesn't ruin the track for me okay now we're fucking talking with Machete i like 7 but wish it went somewhere instead of only being a minute long, i was into it :( Run On is good! it's a fun one. the sampling is doing some work here though i like Everloving a lot and i swear i've heard this melody before but not the song. wtf Inside is really nice; i really like this sort of warbly underwater vocal background The Sky Is Broken is ringing a bell but i don't recall the spoken word (and don't really care for it, honestly, which is too bad because i like the track a lot otherwise). this is going to bother me. did something use this instrumental My Weakness has this weird ass distorted vocal sampling that is like catnip to me. oh my god is this the song that was in X-Files? IT IS. well i do love this song i mean he's got an ear for good vocal samples, i'll give him that. i debated high 3 vs low 4 and the back half of the album talked me into a 4. there's more variety here than i thought at first glance and i really like the progression from the first half of the album to the second. tbh i prefer the second half of the album, find it more interesting, and don't care as much for the singles. the second half is a lot moodier, a little weirder. i'm trying to pin down a criticism and i think all of this feels a little 'safe' to me? having read some about his work, i want to listen to some of his other albums to compare to. oh shit Flower is a song i love but it's not *technically* on this album lmao, it's on the extended cut

interesting. i love Sweet Child O' Mine and i've heard Welcome To The Jungle to absolute death like everyone else but i don't know that i'm familiar with much other Guns N' Roses. was there some kind of somethingawful post about the video for November Rain? i vividly remember reading *something* online that was funny about the cake jump, downloading the song off Limewire to listen to it, and not really liking it. whatever that's not even on this album this is irrelevant i'm trying very, very hard to be objective about Welcome To The Jungle. i don't even know if i 'dislike' it now, it's just a song i've heard so many fucking times and has been embedded in pop culture so deeply that i don't really know how i feel about it anymore. there are some parts of this song that kind of suck ass. but the parts of the song that aren't those are really good. in conclusion, Welcome To The Jungle is a land of contrasts. thank you i don't dislike It's So Easy but it's-- sorry-- making me think about that post about how you hear about how KISS is satanic and terrifying and they look Like That, and then all their songs are like 'we're gonna rock, rock with the rock, woo :)'. from a certain angle, man, music used to be incredibly uncool. despite having it on very good authority that they were all doing lots of drugs and having lots of sex. wouldn't know it from the music Nightrain sucks so good. the chorus is carrying this one Mr. Brownstone won me over with the rapid verse vocals, that's fun oh Paradise City is this band lmao. this is one of those things i've heard referenced ten thousand times but never witnessed the original. this song is Fine. i think the chorus everyone quotes is really the only noteworthy bit tbh My Michelle is not good. chorus isn't awful Think About You is lame but catchy. honestly, this album in general is kinda lame but catchy i love Sweet Child O' Mine. true story: for many many years i had a corrupt mp3 of it that turned into earsplitting static about 8 seconds in. so i still have an instinctive urge to fumble for the 'skip track' button when i hear that intro. i didn't *actually hear the song* for fucking YEARS. turns out it's good! probably the best on the album! Anything Goes is fun but i heard the opening 'i've been thinkin' 'bout, thinkin' 'bout sex' and did a spittake. 80srockandroll.mp3 (some very cool distorted guitar sound stuff here though) have sex noises in a song *ever* been good? i'm sorry this may be controversial but i think i'm on the side of no. okay Windowlicker by Aphex Twin might be my only exception. those are load-bearing. this is all to say i was enjoying the first third of Rocket Queen and then we went on a journey that i think went kinda pearshaped i think this might be archetypical buttrock. i can't really explain what buttrock is, but you know it when you hear it. if a guy yells 'HOOH!' you've got like an 80% chance of being in a buttrock song this is solid and catchy; some of the tracks are kind of forgettable but i think they universally at least have a very memorable pop hook in there somewhere. it's a little bit junk food but it's well-executed junk food, with a couple alltimer bits, and the remainder is however you feel about some... weird idiosyncrasies. i don't really like those idiosyncrasies but they don't ruin the album for me. (the 'talk-singing' is not good and he should do it less. some of it works but a bunch of it doesn't.) i think this exemplifies virtually all the complaints i hear about mainstream rock. i like it, though

this album cover mmmmight ring a bell but i don't think i know this one. it's described as krautrock so i'm interested to hear this because i feel like i enjoy a lot of things *inspired by* krautrock but not necessarily a lot of the genuine article from the jump, this does not sound like i was expecting it to lmao. lot more conventional, tbh. also very modern- you could have told me this was made last year and i'd believe you i was in fact recognizing the album cover! i've heard Seeland, i think it's on.... some playlist i have. and i like it very much Leb' Wohl is very pretty. little surprised the lyrics are in english and honestly i think i'd prefer they weren't. title evidently means 'Farewell'. i took some college german and got pretty far with it but didn't remember that. (i have a lot of affection for german. it's a very regular language. you can learn 90% of the grammar in a basic college sequence. it's also frankly a more beautiful language than anyone gives it credit for) Hero is a jam E-Musik is also a jam and there's some really interesting guitar sound and backmasking at the end here After Eight is *also* a jam. this or E-Musik is probably my favorite track i dunno, it's definitely repetitive, but in a way i like and something about it speaks to me. a bunch of music i like sounds similar to this. i don't know that i would think to go back and listen to it again but i enjoyed it. kind of curious about their other work. evidently at least one of these guys was involved with Kraftwerk, who i wasn't particularly into as a kid but i'd like to see if i still feel the same way now. torn between a 3 and a 4 here. i'm going to allow myself a little contrarianism and slant 4 because i have a feeling this one has a low rating

yet another one i've never heard of. i'm being humbled here. accidentally saw the rating on this one up front, which i try to avoid. will try to ignore it i don't... think this is for me i like the instrumental in These Early Days, at least! i have no idea what this instrument i like is. a synth of some kind, i guess? and there's some fun organ there, see, there's something happening here do not like I Always Was Your Girl but at least the saxophone is nice i don't hate The Night I Heard Caruso Sing- this almost works for me- but i don't care for the piano and i started liking it less when she came in on vocals Goodbye Sunday is all right Tears All Over Town has a funky bassline but eegghh i'm at Lonesome for a Place I Know and it's not bad, none of this is bad, but i'm like 'ah, no thank you, please, i simply couldn't eat another bite' somebody should make vaporwave out of this. sorry i'm like half-kidding. but there are some non-vocal things here that i think have potential or that i like, i'm just... not. into the whole package. i thought 'this is music that really boring dads put on to fuck to in the 90s' and that's very mean but uh i'm recording it regardless. there's nothing really wrong with this, and there are elements here i like, but it's just not... quite my taste. mostly i'm vexed because i like a bunch of more modern stuff that feels like it's trying to *evoke* this kind of music or remix it, but i'm struggling to get into this. it feels like a ton of current online niche 'nostalgiacore' music is trying to tap into the sound on this album, so i think it's probably notable on those grounds this album has spurred me into a 'do i only like this if it's being done with a vague hint of irony? am i THAT guy?' crisis. i'm going to have to write a thinkpiece about vaporwave or something because of this album

Blueberry Hill. i am, sort of, kind of, extremely familiar with this song, for the stupidest and weirdest reasons. when i was maybe 10 years old i played a very esoteric mod, Half-Quake Amen. it's weird and surreal and meta and has some sort of kaizo mario-ass mechanics. whether it's 'good' is not something i'm prepared to tackle, but i had absolutely never fucking seen anything like it, and we were several years away from contemporary indie games existing and playing with the medium like that. it completely changed my ideas of 'what can a video game be'. it has a bunch of music in it- some homemade, but also a bunch of existing stuff. it was the first time i heard Come To Daddy, for example, and it has a loop that i loved and didn't find out was a fucking Nine Inch Nails song for another 12 years or so. this is getting very long-winded but tldr there's a stupid fucking song where these austrian motherfuckers sing about the game, and that song has been in my head for over 2 decades, and today i have learned that they're singing over Blueberry Hill. anyway, Blueberry Hill's a good song i like Blue Monday but i do feel like it's musically quite similar to Blueberry Hill a *lot* of these songs sound very similar, actually, lol his voice on Troubles Of My Own is good and he's also really strong on You Done Me Wrong. i wasn't as convinced earlier. also You Done Me Wrong is fun in general okay no Reeling And Rocking is where i understand that he's a great singer lol The Fat Man's Hop is a hard song to find. i really love the brass here but this is identical piano to Blueberry Hill Trust In Me's great. maybe my favorite because of how i'm having to do this i'm getting autoplayed into other stuff that's not on this album and liking it more, honestly. I'm Walkin' is real good, i like Jambalaya huh! i feel like a plebe for not rating this higher but i've got some issues here. there are several songs that all sound very, *very* similar, and i don't think his singing is as strong on some tracks as it is on others. i think this album has some great stuff on it, but i'm not sure i'd rank it as a great whole album. it's a bit uneven. it's also frankly just not really my taste; i think i prefer other genres from this era. this falls into the category of things that are *so* foundational i can't really get a grip on how i feel about them learning that i've known Blueberry Hill for most of my life was crazy though

okay this one i do know. did these absolute mad lads really name their first three (maybe four) albums as numbered self-titles? how did i not know that? anyway i've loved Immigrant Song since i heard it as a kid but don't recognize anything else on this album christ was Immigrant Song really 1970? that's even crazier, tbh; that feels early. song still fucks hard i might have heard Friends? this kind of jangly proggy guitar rings a bell. and it's good Since I've Been Loving You goes some PLACES i think i've heard Gallows Pole? it's awesome even if i'm not entirely sure how i feel about the banjo Hats off To (Roy) Harper is WEIRD. in a way i'm not sure i'm into. i don't like it when things are mixed all in one ear, generally. my left ear hurts. i'd like it a lot more if not for that there's more, like... almost bluegrass influence here than i was expecting? which is to say, not a ton, but not zero. i don't think this is a perfect album; i think it meanders a little. the highs are very high, though
