so funky and smooth. Amazing use of drums and the best type of jazz to have on in the background. The instruments used throughout this album mirror, to me, the sounds of nature; like the buzz of insects, or the rush of a river or the slight crackling of a hot day. Creates this gorgeous image of floating down a river while the sun beats down on me (a must try). A standout track for me was watermelon man the use of drums, piano and sax are to dieeee for. I really enjoyed listening but I do find myself leaning towards more lyrical based songs- but I don’t hate jazz…never that… just something I could only listen to selectively
wow quite literally amazing…the funkiness and groove throughout the whole album is impeccable. But don’t let the funk fool you theres some darker moments too, with ‘drugs’ and ‘cant memories wait’ - equally as gorgeous with this heavier atmosphere and punchier delivery. One thing I really loved was the lyricism, theres a certain playfulness in David Byrne’s delivery that almost masks the aggressive and dark undertones of the lyrics…it’s so genius AND fun. Standouts for me have to be ‘cities’ ‘minds’ ‘cmw’ and ‘heaven’
Ive never delved into blur’s discography but I knew it would be fun. This whole album is so playful and so very British. Britain owes blur money, the way they all made being British cool and fun again. Like Japan has anime as reparations for their war crimes and Britain has blur. (Honestly the British are very lucky they have given us so many talented musicians…) The lyrics are simple but Damon’s voice is so perfect for each song. Theres so much life in this album…also the guitar playing throughout this album is insane too. My favs have to be ‘parklife’, ‘bank holiday’, ‘London loves’ and ‘to the end’…and just to be greedy ‘jubilee’ too
This was a sweet listen, Joni has a beautiful and soft voice, very gorgeous. I was today years old when I realised one of my fav songs this year sampled her song ‘California’ off this album- which also happens to be my favourite out of all the tracks. To be honest though, I wasn’t exactly blown away. I felt that most of the tracks blended into one another and sonically the songs were kind of a bore…nice background music not something I’d playlist though. Im sad it didn’t resonate with me as much because I know how well loved this album is
Ok so I think we’ve acknowledged the fact that as much as I enjoy a nice beat or beautiful instruments i do find myself also placing importance on lyrics. Which is why this album fell flat for me. Great guitar playing but songs went on for too long meaning I’d get bored half way through…my interest would pique in the beginning and then slowly fall away as I realised that this was just it…just not my genre I think
This was a very charming listen. Lots of hard, dark and rock n roll sounds throughout.It felt very Elvis inspired at times too. Loads of personality bursting from each track…the singers voice had this raw, screechy delivery which only just amplified the overall vibe of the album. I will say some of the tracks felt like fillers but overall it was enjoyable..my fav tracks has to be ‘wail’ and ‘skunk’
A great album all in all- much better than back 2 black I think. Amy has an amazing voice on her that just improves any song. So many of the tracks have such catchy hooks and choruses that get stuck in your head. It’s insane she was so young when making this project..her, 19 releasing a well-renowned album..me, 20 rating albums at 1am when I should be studying :( ..anyways standouts have to be ‘mr magic’, ‘in my bed’ and ‘Amy Amy Amy’. Frank is an album that has aged marvellously
A strong album that I rate a strong 3. Neil young, his way of singing and his stripped back approach with his instrumentals remind me of Elliot smith in a way…even the subject matter spoken about in his songs…a lot of heavy or darker topics being covered throughout the album. Really enjoyed the tracks ‘tell me why’- because this one specifically reminded me of Elliot and I also really loved ‘birds’ where he still kept his usual vocal approach on this track but also showcased his vocals more…there was a rare moment with him playing around with his voice
Really cool name for a band…me likey. It kind of started amazing and ended amazing, not too much to say about the middle though
Ive been so inconsistent I half listened to this while studying ,so I treated this album like it was background music..apologies. What I did notice was that I could immediately tell this was music from the 80s..just really great use of instruments and very fresh and warm type of sounds created. I enjoyed this album overall but should try listening again with clear and open ears..also my fav has to be ‘walk of life’ and ‘why worry’
