I liked this one more than Brothers in Arms, although I couldn't tell you exactly why. It's a decent album but not amazing.
Sultans of Swing is the best. I like Knopfler a lot as a guitarist, I think his style is very unique within the realms of rock, but I don't really like his voice. Lots of fun energy on this album, but the actual melodies don't really stand out to me.
This has got some of the best Dire Straits songs on it. They don't all kick ass, but the ones that do have some of my favorite guitar playing of all time.
Not bad! I feel like this doesn’t quite have the same energy as Brothers in Arms, but it’s more consistent to me. Sultans is all-time great, and the rest vibes so well. Knopfler has a keen ear for those swaggy, smooth melodies, dude sounds like he’s on permanent vacation. 3.5
I forget how I found “Sultans of Swing”, but when I heard it, that turned Dire Straits into a band that I knew of to one I had to check out. There’s no topping their first album though, which is perfectly sexy and loaded with tight musicianship. I do have to knock some points off for the weaker tracks, but this is what AOR should sound like. A-
