Planet Rock: The Album
Afrika Bambaataa-Renegades of Funk is a banger, but RATM did a better version -Turns out this guy has been accused of sexually assaulting a bunch of boys, so 0/5, I guess.
-Renegades of Funk is a banger, but RATM did a better version -Turns out this guy has been accused of sexually assaulting a bunch of boys, so 0/5, I guess.
The best Sepultura album. The way it mixes thrash metal with the groove elements is still unparalleled.
-Money For Nothing kind of goes on for too long -Walk of Life is nice -This is a lot more soft rock than I expected -why is there an 8-minute-long soft rock love ballad?! -The synth pan flute is odd but not necessarily bad -The Man's Too Strong and One World were pretty good
Not a fan of Bob Dylan's singing style with the constant upward inflections, but his songwriting is on point. The first half of this release, the acoustic half, also has a really intimate feeling that is very enjoyable. Dylan's singing style bothers me a lot here though. The second half, with The Hawks, is a masterful performance. Atmospheric, psychedelic, folky, and rockin'. Dylan's singing is a bit more restrained, which fits the music better and is far more enjoyable.
Nice vocals harmonies, as expected, and it is pretty easy to hear their influence on so much music that came after them, but the songs themselves aren't really doing much for me.
The White Stripes' roots clearly run back to 70s classic rock, especially on songs like 'Expecting', 'The Union Forever', and 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' but the garage rock approach really helps set them apart and breathes new life into the tired classic rock formula. Love the droning, ominous organ chords on 'The Union Forever'. Stripped down garage rock isn't my biggest jam, but this album does it well. Big early psych rock vibes to the back half of the album, such as 'I Think I Smell a Rat' and 'Aluminum', which is rad as hell.
Not really a fan of this sound at all. The musicianship is good, but it's not for me.
-The scooped-mid guitar tone is abysmal -The tough-guy posturing is embarrassing for anyone older than 18 -Fucking Hostile sounds like they tried to write a Ride-era Metallica song but forgot the part where Metallica is good -Walk is goofy as hell and has been memed into oblivion at this point -Vulgar display of bad music
Maybe a little overhyped, but there's a reason this album gets so much praise; it's excellent. Dark Side of the Moon is not my favourite PF release, I think each of the three subsequent albums surpass it, but this was where they really transformed themselves into a great band. Money is one of the all-time best prog rock songs.
Van Morrison is very boring to me.
Not bad. Had some heavy moments that were interesting, but it also wasn't really keeping my attention in a lot of places.
-Some good beats and great vibes -Kinda wish it were a bit shorter -Album feels a bit front-loaded with the best songs
She has a great voice I'm really liking some of these songs, such as Shadowboxer or Slow Like Honey. Some of these tracks feel timeless, while others feel a little dated.
POWER and All of the Lights are absolute bangers Probably the best Kanye album? At least it's the last one where his ambition and ego were still positives fueling his creativity before getting diminishing returns on subsequent albums. Great beats, exceptional hooks, great use of samples. Runaway and Blame Game feel a little overlong, and there is a bit of a forecasting of the born-again religious direction he would take on his more recent albums. 4/5
-A pretty good example of late-60s psych rock, and arguably one of the earliest heavy metal albums, though it doesn't bear much resemblance to what the term would come to mean. -It's loud, it's messy, and copious amounts of acid were involved in making this album; what more could you want? -It does feel pretty dated at times though, and aside from the Summertime Blues cover, lacks a big hook.
None of this is particularly interesting. Dylan's singing is toned down from the incredibly overwrought inflections he had a decade earlier, but his phrasing still feels really odd at times. Not a fan of the more country-esque twang that permeates a lot of these songs The songs all sound kind of the same. Not bad, I would listen to this if someone put it on, but I won't go looking to listen to it myself again.
One of the most iconic rock albums of all time, the medium of electric guitar is probably nowhere near the same if this album is not made. The popular songs, Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady etc. are all great, plus songs like Manic Depression or I Don't Live Today are great deeper cuts.
Feels very comforting and cozy.
Pretty snoozy late 60s pop music.
I like some of these songs, but others are a little too down-tempo for my tastes.
Meh, this is the kind of indie rock that holds no interest for me.
-This is some cool feel-good dance-y psychedelia -I don't necessarily love the feel-good type of psychedelic music, but it is good for a certain mood. -These songs feel like they're made for raves rather than listening in your home, which makes it a little harder to get into at my home office.
-Jeff Beck is a pretty cool guitarist -I Ain't Superstitious is an all-time guitar rock tune -There are some good blues rock songs on here but they also don't always stand out much.
I had never heard of this album before, but this is the kind of singer-songwriting stuff I latch onto really well. Feels like there is ambition here in the arrangements, and the vocal lines are dripping with emotion. Songs like Silver Raven, Strength of Strings, and Some Misunderstanding are the highlights. Sounds like it was a flop on release, which is a shame.
Rock and roll changed a LOT in even the 10 years after this album came out Can't say this is doing much for me, really. It's a bunch of oldies pop songs that has more in common with soul and R&B than it does rock music nowadays. None of these are even the Elvis songs I recognize. This bluesier songs are the best ones here.
-Renegades of Funk is a banger, but RATM did a better version -Turns out this guy has been accused of sexually assaulting a bunch of boys, so 0/5, I guess.
Could stand to have a better mix, but ultimately this album absolutely rocks regardless. It's a bit of an underrated part of Metallica's catalog due to leaning a bit more towards the prog-thrash movement that was happening at the time. Really deserves more appreciation.
This really has not aged all that well. It's some middle of the road blues rock schlock. Clapton is also a shithead, so I don't feel any reason to give this much time.
The proggiest Police album, with a lot of similarities to 80s-era Rush, plus it has a song about dinosaurs. Has some cool and weird deep cuts, like Walking in Your Footsteps, O My God, and Mother. The title tracks are bangers. Still not into Every Breath You Take though. Boring song.
Not all that interesting. Some nice chord patterns, but I don't love any of the vocal hooks.
Pretty cool! A very interesting art rock album.
Feels kind of dated in this day and age. Not bad, but most of the songs are a bit underwhelming.
I am finding this largely just kind of annoying.
This is some good early glam rock.
A classic Stones album. Paint it Black and Under My Thumb are great tunes and hold up well. Stupid Girl is really bad though.
One of the finest electronic albums and a pioneer of the genre.
I'm not a fan of country music, but John Prine is one of the ones I can appreciate at least a little bit. Paradise, Angel of Montgomery, and Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore are the highlights here.
-Rocket is a boring tune -I actively loathe Pour Some Sugar One Me -Love Bites is the least powerful power ballad I've ever heard For one of the best-selling rock albums of all time, this feels remarkably edge-less in hindsight This album is in a weird grey zone between hair metal and pop rock where it doesn't really commit to either one enough. Makes me just want to listen to Dokken. Best songs: Woman, Armageddon It
Very much a throwback to 70s pop rock. Hard to Handle is probably overplayed a bit, but I do like it Struttin' Blues absolutely rocks Overall, I don't really love this, but it does have a couple good tracks.
Not the Aerosmith album I would have first thought about, honestly. Doesn't really have any standout singles but it has some good deeper cuts. Rats in the Cellar and Nobody's Fault are standout songs.
5/5, one of the best thrash metal albums ever.
The best Sepultura album. The way it mixes thrash metal with the groove elements is still unparalleled.
Sultans of Swing is the best. I like Knopfler a lot as a guitarist, I think his style is very unique within the realms of rock, but I don't really like his voice. Lots of fun energy on this album, but the actual melodies don't really stand out to me.
I liked the more rock oriented songs. Join the Boys, People, etc. This is nice but doesn't really stick in my mind very much.
Muse is a great band, and their conspiracy theory vibes are bit harder to stand in this day and age, but this album is absolutely fantastic. Knights of Cydonia is an all-time great tune. Starlight, Map of the Problematique, Assassin, and Supermassive Black Hole are all top tier songs.
Meh. Not really into this kind of French pop.
The last good Green Day album and it's a rock opera that is probably still very lyrically relevant 20 years later. I think it lags a bit in the back half, but the front half is unbelievable.
Very nice and shimmery!
A decent album but I wasn't as thrilled with this as I am some of Stevie's other albums.
Pretty good glam metal album. Some of the songs are definitely filler (Feel Your Love Tonight, On Fire, Little Dreamer, etc.) but it's hard to deny how cool Ain't Talking 'Bout Love, Eruption, or I'm The One are. Jamie's Cryin' is a bad and overrated song, and Running With the Devil is pretty lame in hindsight too. VH would go on to have much better albums, but this is a great debut.
Has some all-time great songs, but has a few filler tracks as well.
Overrated Beatles pastiche.
Why did no one tell me this album was like a combination of Yes, Queen, and Pink Floyd?! It's got a lot of the things I like about psych rock, leaning in a vaguely prog rock direction.
Miles Davis created so many of the all-time greatest jazz records and had so many different approaches. In a Silent Way is another one of those, standing alongside Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew, and the underrated Dark Magus as masterpieces.
This is the album where Kendrick really stepped up to take the throne. While he has since surpassed this album, it is the first one that really showed what he could do. Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe, Backseat Freestyle, and Swimming Pools are incredibly powerful songs.
Some good songs, but this feels better as background music rather than active listening. A few tracks feel unnecessary. Sparrow is a tune that oozes cool.
How many Bob Dylan albums are in this thing?! Masters of War is a great tune, but a lot of this just feels too sappy for me.
I like this more than I do their big single. There aren't really any songs that jump out at me, but I do think this is a nice, cohesive whole. Herbie Hancock does a solo and that's cool.
An energetic live performance from one of the legends of blues guitar. It's a bit on the short side, but it still is absolutely smoking.
Has some annoying 80s noises on it. This is kind of boring.
Solid album. Has a couple great songs and some good deep cuts. 3/5
Not bad. It has a very chill feeling, like a lot of the classic rock from the 70s did, but with a more interesting instrumentation. That said, I also feel like this is a little too beholden to the 70s radio-friendly dad rock without really trying anything new like a lot of the classic bands from that period were doing. Mid-tempo 70s pop rock pastiche.
This is fine. Not really my favourite of the 90s alt rock stuff but I would listen to this if it came on. 3/5
An essential live rock album. The extended version of Whipping Post is a masterpiece of live jamming.
I had never gotten around to this before, but listening now, this is great. Janis has some wild rock and roll moments juxtaposed against some really nice laid back gospel and R&B moments.
Yeah this is fine. Don't really love it, don't really hate it. 2.5/5
The album that codified so many heavy metal tropes into one. It has some brilliant tracks, such as the title track, The Wizard, and NIB. However, I think it falls flat in the second half, with some pretty unmemorable songs.
Stevie Wonder could do no wrong for a good period of time. Higher Ground is an absolute banger of a song.
The last AC/DC to sound like a barroom rock band. After this, their sound morphed into something far bigger and more electrifying. The title track is an all-time classic rock song, and deeper cuts like Shot Down In Flames, Girls Got Rhythm, Night Prowler, and If You Want Blood are all great.
I don't like this album much. Boring classic pop rock without any edges.
This is the kind of odd new wave that existed at the very beginning of the genre and I wish had been kept around for longer. Not bad, though I don't see myself revisiting this much.
The first album of a legendary career; dare I even say the greatest metal band of all time? It has a couple spots where the songwriting could be tighter, but overall this is a great album/
Overlong and a bit preachy in hindsight, this album nonetheless contains some absolute bangers like Pinball Wizard and Acid Queen.
A good example of how early Queen was influenced by some of the prog rock bands of the day, before really figuring out how to synthesize that with a pop approach. Decent, but no truly transcendent songs.
The best Van Halen album. Jump, Hot For Teacher, and Panama are all classic songs.
I don't like Kiss, but at least Detroit Rock City is a great song. Why are there so many random-ass sounds over the music on this album? The better songs on this album are still mostly kinda boring. Part of this is probably hindsight of the ages, I am sure this was a wild party rocking album in its day, but to my modern ears it sounds pretty easy-going and light.
Listen, David Bowie has too many good albums. It is completely unfair. Changes and Life on Mars? are all-timers
