Perfection.
Perfection.
Mediocre songs and J Mascis sings out of tune. But I like the sound in general.
This is a strong album from Dinosaur Jr. displaying everything that makes their sound unique: the noisy guitars in which you can drown, that come in contrast with nonchalant vocals from J Mascis and his insane solos. These guys seems to be totally laid back but they're actually technically quite good, but with no show off, they're just doing it casually. More than 35 years later, it does not sound out-dated.
Love this album and the contrasts from songs like Freak Scene and Don’t
Enjoyably noisy indie rock album, with grungy vocals (although predating actual grunge by several years). True confession - I avoided this for ages because I thought that Dinosaur Jr were a novelty kids band or something. Doh.
This album makes me sigh. As a heavy metal fan I find myself unable to get into this kind of rock music. It's not metal, it's not punk, what is it? "Hard rock"? "Grunge"? "Alternative" (to what)? I feel like maybe I just missed the memo on this style or rock music. To me the noisy instruments' energy clashes with the vocals. My ears just find this mismatched, if that makes sense. So yeah, this one's a thumbs down for me. It can bug off!
One of my favorite albums of all time. So happy to see it on the list. Great rock album
Now I know where all the garage rock and indie bands from the 2000s got their inspiration from.
I guess Dinosaur Jr are in the same bucket as Sonic Youth for me - hugely influential on the bands that had a major impact on me. So I can listen and enjoy it, but it doesn't quite make a connection.
