Jan 2 Zoned out after a couple songs, bored a couple songs before end
Liked two songs (because know the Siouxsie and Prince covers), but otherwise was annoyed, too long
Liked it, way better than The Beatles Already knew "Time of the Season" but not the band
Delightful, hadn't heard quite a few songs that are gems (e.g. the batshit "Mother").
"Graveyard Train" is a standout, want to hear a drone doom cover. A lot of jam session moments throughout.
Very strong start to the album, but lost me at some point and was bored by the end.
I really enjoyed it at first, it totally wasn't what I was expecting. Was some nice chill background music but then I found the really short tracks to be a bit jarring, made me want to not keep listening to it.
Gotta say the title made me cringe before even looking at what was on this album. I've always liked the 2 singles on this album but somehow hadn't noticed Sting's fake Jamaican accent bits before. Ugh. Ruins what would otherwise be a good album.
Best thing about this album is that it's short. "You Can't Do That" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.
One of my complaints about The Beatles is that every song is essentially about the same thing, gets super repetitive and boring. All the songs on this album are essentially about the same thing, and yet I thoroughly enjoyed this one. So not so much the subject matter but the delivery. And this guy delivers.
The first Cohen album I have listened to, and I was pleasantly surprised that I totally loved it. It’s brilliant.
I had never heard of this band. Album sort of annoyed me, can’t put my finger on why. After listening, I immediately forgot what it sounded like.
My favourite Beastie Boys album. One of those that needs repeated listens and a deep dive, always something new to notice. Recommend the 33 1/3 book on it if you are interested in how it was made.
Never heard them before, didn't know what to expect. Somehow I find the music to be nice and chill, but then when the vocals kick in, it's sooo boring. The cover matches how it sounds.
I was prepared to absolutely hate this, but it's honestly completely inoffensive. I didn't hate any of the songs and I wasn't mad that I was listening to it. For this and likely many albums from 2000 on that are on this list though, the question is whether it was fair to add albums that had only been out for a couple years prior to publication (original list came out in 2005). Like, are the list authors really saying that they thought the newest Coldplay album had as much staying power as a Miles Davis album that was already 50 years old?
Albums like this are why I’m doing this list. Literally never heard of the band, but this entire album is wonderful!
On paper I should like this album, but Chrissie Hynde’s voice has always annoyed me. I truly wish it weren’t so.
I’m not really a prog fan, but this mostly kept my interest.
Was happy to have this one pop up, I am not familiar enough with this legend.
Beck is better in small doses. An entire album is a bit much, a 52-minute album is way too much. I've finished all the other albums I started on this list so far, but I just couldn't with this one.
Perfection.
Never heard of this band, was interesting having zero expectations for an album that is all over the place (in a good way, I think!). Some really great moments on here, though I feel like I need multiple listens to pin down a true rating.
What I'd rather listen to than The Beatles, if wanting to listen to something Beatles-ish.
Somehow this is the first full Joni Mitchell album I've ever listened to, and I was surprised. The singles that always get played don't really capture all the different styles she has going on, at least in this album. I'm a fan!
Fine, if you don't listen to the lyrics.
Enjoyable! Nice to see something like this on the list.
No clue why I hadn’t listened to this before. I listen to Henry Rollins' radio show regularly so I know I've heard a Minutemen song here and there, but it hits very different when there's a whole bunch all at once. Ended up listening to it twice and it just got better. Most excellent.
Believe the hype, this album is fantastic.
I’ve listened to this album literally 100s of times, including a couple weeks ago for Bowiemas/Bowienalia, and yet I was happy to see it pop up here - and I gladly listened to it yet again - because it’s perfect.
First Beyoncé I’ve purposely listened to. I can see why people love her, it’s just not for me.
I have never heard of this band and had zero expectations. Unfortunately, it is one of the worst albums I've ever heard.
I really didn’t want to listen to another Yes album so soon, but ended up liking it more than the other one. Possibly because I think the longer form tracks work better with whatever they’re doing?
Somehow this is the first full REM album I've listened to, though I've always loved Michael Stipe's voice and whenever a song comes on. Love it!
I never heard of this band before. The album is pretty wild, but reading their Wikipedia page is even wilder.
One of my favourite finds from this list so far. I had never heard her before, and had to listen to this twice. Enchanting.
Very enjoyable background listening, love this kind of jazz, though I didn't realize when the album had ended and Apple Music continued playing similar suggested songs.
I could fill pages talking about this album. But, in short, this is the definition of ‘masterpiece’. Bowie’s greatest, imho. I was lucky enough to see the band (Donny McCaslin’s quartet) live the year after this came out, was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
One of those bands that I knew I had heard before but couldn't have told you what they sounded like. Turns out, I like them! I've heard at least a couple of songs from this album, and I think the band is even better heard in a full-album context. Pretty solid album.
I had never knowingly heard this band before, but this album sounds like when you buy a new pair of jeans and they’re already broken in, with some tasteful little rips, a bit of fraying at the hem.
I found myself surprisingly bored listening to this album.
I cannot get ‘Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone’ out of my head. Worth the listen even if just for that song.
Not really my thing but I was in the right mood so it was an enjoyable listen.
I should probably mark this as 'did not listen' because I couldn't stand more than a couple songs.
I was totally going to skip listening to this because I assumed I'd hate it. But then I heard track 2, "Mr. Brightside", and realized that the scene in the movie The Holiday has made me like at least that song, so I gave it a go...And then I got to that other very overplayed hit, "Somebody Told Me" and remembered I REALLY hate that song, and then I recognized/disliked the next one...Me and pop simply have a very fragile relationship.
A favorite. A great one to introduce the uninitiated to Fela.
An absolute classic.
Meh, it was okay. The single was the only song I knew, and was the highlight of the album. Best part though was, when it finished, Apple Music assumed I then wanted to listen to Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, which I did.
I want to put this at a 3.5. I went between really digging a song to not paying attention at all, and back again.
An album I always enjoy returning to.
I mean, they don’t call her The Queen of Soul for nothing.
I had never heard of this band and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy every single song. But it seemed like a compilation of like 3 or 4 bands, the difference from one song to the next was a bit strange.
It's annoying how good this is.
A favorite for the last 20+ years. It still sucks that he's gone.
I like Neil Young a lot, but this album (on a first time listen) didn't really grab me.
I was pretty meh about this until that last 19-minute track, and now I want to listen to it again.
This was an odd one. Didn't mind some songs, hated some others.
Thanks to Henry Rollins, I've been listening to this band for ages and so am sure I've heard this entire album a song at a time at least a few times each. Nice to hear it in one go.
It's honestly a perfect album.
